Are there any real downsides to doing a preliminary bandaid turbo build to get everything bolted up whilst waiting to get a standalone ECU?
Reason I'm asking is that I have everything I need to turbo the car aside from the standalone ECU and figured that I might as well bolt it all up and run a low boost application with the standard management, with the fueling and timing adjusted until I can get it all done properly.
Happy with the car as it is NA but having a pile of brand new shiny turbo parts laying around is killing me!
Plans are as follows:
TD04L-13T Kraken manifold Kraken downpipe RX8 540cc injectors AFPR MBC wound to 7psi FMIC 2.5" exhaust NGK 0.8 gapped spark plugs Boost guage
N/A car is running 127.8 whp, the above should push to a safe 160ish whp.
When funds allow, ME221 PNP ECU with tuning to obtain roughly 200 whp (or there abouts).
Suggestions? Criticisms? Any constructive input welcomed.
Ta

My suggestion is just go for the ECU, or even go with a second hand MS.
Are you going to get it mapped with the bandaid or just hope? The price of the map will be not alot difference to the price of an ECU, seems pointless.
I got the same as you but with a MSPNP second hand and made 210 at the wheels, limited by the injectors and now I'm pissed i need to buy another set plus pay for mapping again...

I've been doing quite a lot of reading and so long as the boost is kept low (5psi-7psi), timing retarded (14 degrees) and fueling adjusted with an AFPR, mapping is not necessary. Saying that, I'm by no means an expert on the situation so I'm just going by what research I've been able to do.
I'll be getting it mapped with everything in place to avoid what you did, I don't plan to go any more than what a set of 540cc injectors will do anyways. I have all of the parts I need (excluding ECU) for the power I'm after. Anymore gained is just a bonus.
If I could find a second hand PNP ECU for a 1997 mk1 1.8 then I'd happily buy one but they're hen's teeth used. A new ME221 is £575.00 and mapping another £300.00 or so on top.

I thought you needed to retard the timing down to like 6? Normal being 10 and advanced to be 14.
Yeah, your right 1997 being 'special', I see your reasons now... Fair enough.

You could be right re the timing, I actually can't remember.
Yeah it's a pain, pretty much gotta be a brand new ECU which is a lot of coin.
