Well it's not quite free, but as good as.
Some time ago I volunteered at a charity called CHICKS (Country Holidays for Inner City KidS), and had a pretty fantastic week being a 10 year old again. CHICKS needs volunteers as well as donations to run their camps, which bring a bunch of kids from all sorts of backgrounds (young carers, poverty, other issues) and chuck them in a barn in the middle of nowhere to do loads of cool fun things that they wouldn't otherwise have a chance to do. When I volunteered, we went on day trips to the swimming pool, stables for horse riding, and to Crealy (possibly the most awesome adventure park in the world). We also did games, trampolining, treasure hunts, arts and crafts, and other awesome things. The kids also get three square meals a day, something they might not have had at home and something many of us will take for granted.
I was reminded of CHICKS today as they got in touch with me about nominating them for our firm's charity of the year, so I thought I'd let you guys know about it as well. Volunteers only have to get to the camp (they will offer to put money towards your travel costs, but come on, free holiday!), and after that they don't need to spend a single penny. As a volunteer, you'll also get to do all of the awesome activities with the kids
It was one of the most rewarding weeks off work I've ever done, and their camps all just so happen to be in blatting-country heaven
If anyone is wondering what to do with their holiday this year, please do give these guys a shout and see if you can help - they rarely get enough volunteers to run the camp as effectively as they would like, so need our help. Take a look and spread the word:
