Fingers, lube and persistence.... Hopefully that will not be misconstrued.... What's the preferred lube for this operation? I've got white lithium grease, engine oil or some dialectic grease. I really couldn't get them in with just my fingers, as it's almost impossible to get the injectors perpendicular to the holes in the fuel rail - that's why I thought a clamp would help so I can make sure it's going in nice and square. Appreciate the suggestions!

I’ve always used Vaseline without any problems, I am sure there are plenty of alternatives.

I’ve always used Vaseline without any problems, I am sure there are plenty of alternatives. I just opened the new seal pack, sat down with my fuel rail, a beer and a small tub of vaseline and had a great evening. Every injector slid in easily, I'll check them out tomorrow on the car for fuel leaks, but I'm optimistic now! The o-rings seemed to be a little thinner, but regardless they went on so much easier than any previous attempt. Really appreciate the tips - let me know if I can get you a shirt or something from the mighty 5 shop in thanks!

No need for that, just glad to help. The knowledge that your problem is fixed is reward enough, that’s what this forum is all about. Fingers crossed no leaks 🤞

Well, that was some misplaced enthusiasm.

Calmed down a bit now after 40 miles of cycling. There's something tranquil about riding at night!
3 / 6 injectors leaked, the problem is the o-rings pinch horribly and then split when putting the injectors into the fuel rail. I thought I'd got passed this last night by being super careful, but apparently not.
So what to do now? Well I've ordered two multi packs of o-rings. Between them, there's 8 different combinations of ID and width that could fit, so some more experimenting to find the biggest o-ring that fits, but doesn't pinch badly will happen on Friday.
Oh, and to make myself feel better I bought a new bike frame on sale. Finally taking the plunge into building my next single speed.

You seem to be having an inordinate amount of problems with what should be a straightforward job. Did the injectors come with seals, were they new? Has anyone else done the same conversion as you on another Datsun...

You seem to be having an inordinate amount of problems with what should be a straightforward job. Did the injectors come with seals, were they new? Has anyone else done the same conversion as you on another Datsun... Yeah, I've fitted fuel rails before and never had this problem. I've tried the seals that came with the injectors and some aftermarket ones, including felpro. Same result every time. I know one other guy using this kit, but he has a different fuel rail. The frustrating thing is that the same three injectors go in perfectly every time and don't leak - you get the satisfying "pop" as they seat into the port on the fuel rail. There's one that I've never got to sit right, and required a ridiculous amount of force to seat, and another two that sometimes leak and sometimes don't. There's no rough edges inside the ports - it honestly seems like some of the ports are just too small. I'm wondering if it's just bad manufacturing tolerance on the fuel rail? My next step is to measure each port and select an o-ring that fits - I have the following options on the way: 8.8 x 1.9mm 9.25 x 1.78mm 9.819 x 2.62mm 10.82 x 1.78mm 10.77 x 2.62mm 11 x 2mm ... along with about 100 other sizes that will no doubt last me a life time, and I'll forever be known as the guy with all the o-rings.

Or, measure the internal diameters of those that do not leak and then ream or lap out the bore (use a bit of rolled up emery paper) of the undersize ones to match. Assuming of course that the sizes are different, which I doubt... they will all have been machined with the same tool.

Yeah, in would expect them to be the same... but they're definitely not. 3 are 10.8mm, then the other three are 10.7, 10.6 and 10.5mm. If anything, they appear to be slightly oval - maybe drilled off true? Either way, I found a combination of o-rings that sealed up nicely - ended up with a set that are .2mm smaller OD than the originals - and took the car for its inaugural 2018 drive home today, and nothing leaked, blew up or set on fire. I'll be checking the fuel rail before every drive for the next few weeks in case anything happens. Have a picture of a not-Jeep in my parking spot at home.

My favourite is to brush a weak washing-up liquid solution around any seals to produce a slight froth. Then run it and see if there are any bubbles produced. Works for gas fitters....

That's a neat tip! I've been religiously checking them with my eyeballs after priming the fuel pump before each drive. 100 or so miles done now and the learning mode on the ECU is doing it's thing. AFR at cruise is perfect, there's still some spluttering at low throttle changes though. Time to start taking the AE settings I think. Also mostly moved out of the storage unit into a good friend's second garage.
