So a friend of mine has inherited an old Honda C90 from 1989 (I think) and a plan has formulated, Lands End to John-O-Groats on old crummy scooties!
Much like the Vietnam Top Gear special but not on quite the same scale.
My question is, where can I get one for free or very cheap? Don't mind having to refresh it to an extent but would love to try and find one for the summer. Odd thing is, they're starting to go up in value as hipsters and the like ride them around Shoreditch "ironically". eBay is the obvious starting point but I was wondering if there was anywhere else worth looking?
Any other suggestions of a similar machine that may or may not be up to the task? I'm trying to avoid an actual moped that has bicycle-like pedals, as I'll be f*cked if i'm pedaling that far...

Lucky your friend didn't inherit a pushbike, I suppose. I like the idea of a bit of an adventure but do you have to buy and use such impractical transport just because they happened to get one for free? With a bigger bike you could at least pack camping gear. If it was me, I might propose one scooter and one 'support van' thereby making it a softer and more luxurious trip for lazy me. Actually the more I think about it, the better that sounds. Maybe you could recruit another mug enthusiastic friend or two and have one van support several scooters. Maybe take turns on the bikes.

I've always fancied one of those old Honda Stepthroughs. I know of one that's dumped in a Creek near me and my father used to have 2 dumped in his garden in the mid-late nineties. I think he 'found them' and then sold them for beer money.
I can't help though but you can get an engine kit for your pushbike for about 70quid. Highly illegal, but I have considered doing it on an old racer for a giggle.

It's kinda the whole point, he's a big biker anyways and it's just funnier to see him toddle around on such a crummy scooter. The idea is that it's a slowped trip, minimal power, no motorways and just see how far we can get. Plus I fancy decking out a rubbish scooter and just generally having a laugh. People do bike trips all the time, it doesn't seem to be much of a challenge but when you're trying to get about on 50cc sh*tters, it adds a whole new element. Thats an idea - after all when TG do all their adventures they have an army of support staff!! Also being that the scooter I'm after will cost next to nothing, if it does die before the end of the trip, chuck it at the local scrap dealer and get a train home. All part of the adventure! Highly illegal, but I have considered doing it on an old racer for a giggle. Haha that would actually be terrifying! I'm looking to do it legally and an old retro step-through would add to the hilarity, especially when decked out in full biker gear. Fair enough, if he's already used to bike touring then doing a long run on junk scooters just for a laugh makes more sense. I'm no biker but a mate who commutes by scooter makes me think you should have no difficulty finding a knackered scooter - he reckons the surest sign that a scooter for sale is Canoeed is that it's a scooter for sale. i.e they're all completely badgered. Getting one for reasonable money might be harder - best of luck.

Haha! I think you could be right, just finding one that people don't want silly money for. Well actually it's not silly money, but considering I'm likely to scrap it afterwards makes it a little harder.
