So since I binned off my soft top, I run a hardtop exclusively. Unfortunately for me it's a crummy TWR hardtop and the fitting is poor, it rattles the living daylights out of it's self and at one point, it nearly made a bid for freedom when (at high speed), one of the front latches let go. Ducktape across the top of the screen/roof sorted the last one.
I'm considering losing the interior latches in favour of some solid brackets bolted in their place. I'm thinking literally some 2/3mm steel and some bolts just so it's properly solid and I get rid of the rattles, I did 130 miles yesterday and it nearly drove me insane.
Is there a downside to this that I haven't thought of? I don't intend to ever run without a roof but it would only be a case of undoing some bolts if I did.

I think you can buy permanent fix brackets made for the job, (i think they are JASS). Only downside I can see is:- WTF its a convertible - why - its the best bit!!!

I'll check out the JASS stuff, could be a goer! Although I've read aftermarket brackets tend to be for OEM Mazda roofs and the fixings are different on the TWR one as it's crap. EDIT: As suspected, the JASS brackets are for the OEM roof only

Looks like a bit of fabrication then, shouldnt be too difficult Couple of bars and jobs a goodun'. It's reassuring that you can actually buy stuff to do exactly what I want to do, I often find I think of something, start to do it, then realise there's something material I hadn't thought of that scuppers my whole plan. Damn my youthful exuberance.

I had mine bolted to the car for ages, there's no downside.
If you run a hardtop in the spec miata series in the usa i think it has to be bolted for safety, they have specially made brackets which is what i used, not sure if you can still get them but they were made by Rennenmetal.
I think Jass may do something similar.

Just needs something similar to the JASS brackets - cut some thick metal to the right shape and drill it in the right places to fit your TWR

Fit jass brackets for 8 months of the year and run with no roof for 4 you big whimpy girly girl Haha! I can't fit the JASS brackets, they don't fit my crappy roof! Although JASS reckon I might be able to use their side brackets for the front as well as the sides but they couldn't confirm. I'll just cut out some homebrew brackets and bolt the suckers on. I don't want to run no roof, my long whimpy girly girl hair will go all over the place! lol

For reference for anyone who reads this going forward, if you have an early TWR hardtop you are able to use the JASS side brackets on the front and sides of your hard top. So, buy two sets of side brackets for about Ā£50 and you can bolt your crappy TWR hardtop down and stop the wind noise and leaks! You're welcome.
