Hey all ! I am planning an nc daily driver !! I m thinkin Kent cams , cold air , exhaust (full) and a map to tie it all together . I m told by skuzzle that a certain someone (horney) ? Has had something along these lines ? Any input welcome with thanks in advance . In addition I ll m thinkin 16s and slightly larger profile . Is that a thing ? It looks like it's a thing but as I say I am in the plan stage which allows for discovery , I m thinkin ultra lite F1 s and 30 mm lower on stock or fresh suspension (I think coil overs will be to harsh) ? Maybe a splitter . Q 1. Are all the 2.0 sport 6 speed manuals equipped with a lsd ? I m thinking up to about a 2009 for my standard car . š Cheers Dave

Hi Dave and welcome aboard. Firstly, yes all 2.0 sports with the 6 speed have a TorSen LSD regardless of year. It's a good choice of MX5 but then I would say that as I have two of them. One for a daily and the other for track. Skuzzle mentioned you might be signing up and that you're local. You're welcome to come and take a ride in the passenger seat of both of mine to see what I a modded one is like. My wife has one as well so we have 3! You are correct to avoid coilovers on a daily in my view. My daily runs the standard Bilstiens with Eibach 30mm lowering springs and RX8 anti roll bars. It still rides nicely but corners much more flatly and generally feels like an MX5 should. It also no longer has the 4x4 ride height. My track one runs BC coilovers and in my opinion are too hard for daily use. THat said I do 30,000 miles a year in my daily so conmfort is quite important to me. Exhaust wise you probably want to see what mine sound like. The track car is shortly to get a manifold to complete the stainless system and I suspect it will be a little too much for every day use. BBR recommend the manifold and then sticking with the standard system for the rest if you don't want be deafened. 1.8 cars came on 16s and they clear the brakes (1.8 and 2.0 all have the same brakes) so running 16s won't be a problem. Tyres might be though. 16 is not a common wheel size. Cams are good (not got any myself yet) and I have a Skuzzle in taker to fit on the track car this weekend! That little lot should get you started but any more questions ask away.

Good coilovers will ride better than stock suspension (Ohlins, GT1) cheap coilovers won't, buy well and it will be good for all use not pigeon holed as one type of car.
I have the Cobra exhaust with the supposedly quiet large box, its not quiet once you have decat manifold but I don't mind it, don't do as much mileage as Horney only 20k, it has improved enjoyment for me, stock the mk3 sounds pathetic.
2.0 non sports had 16s, 17s are a better size for tyre choice, you'll be looking at 7.5x17 with an ET of 45-50mm and 215/45/17 tyres if you go aftermarket.
I have got the Kent cams from Skuzzle, they have made the car quite enjoyable but NA tuning is a bit fruitless and add naff all power really for the dough, nice too have if you are feeling flush, also whilst they are great balls out there is some low speed issues with the mapping on these that needs to be resolved before it can match the OE feel of the BBR200 for a daily driver, but I'll be honest here it appeared to be getting better with mileage perhaps ECU settling but now I have had the battery off I'll probably have to go through it again.
I haven't tried the intake yet, jury is out on that, my front is off and I have one but I'm undecided as to whether to fit it or ditch it.
The other angle you can come at it if you are going to do it all at once is that if you tot up all the bits to do NA tuning you could skip the lot and for an extra grand or so get the base supercharger kit from corten miller and have much more power and torque even without any other mod, I haven't done so as mine my grew over the years partly as I set a budget limit each year for motorsports stuff and a supercharger would take it all, in addition I didn't want to move to unlimited class on sprints etc but I am seriously thinking about it for my upgrade next year.

Wow !! That is a lot to take on board , thankyou both so much for your reply s and input . I must say it's a treat to have the support available and look forward to seeing at least 1 of your 3 cars horney . Getting a little closer to a tuned mk 3 will definitely help with motivation. I should think I ll purchase the original car sometime in the next few months and will look forward to catching up with yourself and others before then . The cams I would only purchase if I was going to see 10/15 horses or so as it's quite a heavy outlay and as sandys? Has mentioned it seems fruitless and then starts to look like a charger might be more the way to go . I am , at this stage looking for N/A but was hoping with the other mods I might see 170 whp with the cams maybe 160 without ? Am I being mistyoptic ? I get the point about good quality coil overs but I m not a young man so my ass leads me to a mentally softer but firm ride if ya catch my drift . I shall think on . Cheers all , š„

WHP with cams will be around 165 I'd have thought. The mk3 is never going to be a powerhouse with NA tuning but they're light and nimble which makes them quite the tool.
I'm aiming for 185 fly HP so that in sprinting I'm on a level playing field with the Clio 182s etc. That should be without cams.

Woo ... more NC people, it really is my favourite looking of the lot (the NC1 only of course...) I can second some of the comments about exhausts ... I have a BBR 200 with the full sports system and its LOUD ... but in a good way I found the standard backbox on a sports manifold was a bit "farty" which i didnt like, BBR did warn me it would be loud but it still took me by surprise. I can also second the comments on NA tuning being expensive for minor bhp increases, but still giving a great fun car The BBR200 is ECU, cams, inlet and exhaust manifolds, and the full stainless exhaust system and gives me about 205-210bhp. Car is very OEM feel as Sandy says, but that still means that its a bit gutless at low revs, something I didnt like about the car pre-conversion but once its up and running it really just wants you to keep your foot in. ps. My BBR200 is basically for sale ... not super cheap but ... SUPER fun ... Just sayin...

Its not that its fruitless it just all tots up, its approx. 4k to get the car to the 200bhp ball park for that you loose some low down torque, gain a bit of mid range and a smidge more power up top.
Its 5k for a drive in drive out supercharger install (I am sure it could be done even cheaper if you are resourceful) instant 230bhp + and a lot more torque, it will still feel NA, just like a bigger NA engine, parasitic losses are often cited at a reason for not doing it but if I am loosing so much low down torque with cams, what's the difference really?
And seriously you won't get a better ride than what the dual stage dampers offer, I've added 5kgs per corner with big wheels and tyres and whilst it has taken some refinement out they still cope well.

Ok ........charger wise . How much will the insurance be affected? , I imagine I ll pay 350 ish fully comp as I m getting on and have full no claims . I think that and the fuel consumption are my concerns ....it's got be a daily driver after all . Any experience welcome please . & then we move onto the charger itself . What is good value for money ? I think 230 horses will be plenty and I will of course need an exhaust for breathing . Again all info appreciated. Many thanks all in advance , this is good stuff š.

You won't need an exhaust, it will of course liberate a few more ponies if you have one, light load scenarios boosted motors are typically better on fuel, when you cane them they are worse.
Insurance is a lottery, your premium will completely depend on the effort you put in.

Most of the kits come out of the US and if Brexit hadn't shafted the pound I would of suggested getting gear from one of the kits from the US guys if you will fix yourself, failing that there is blink motorsport and Corten Miller details on mx5supercharger.co.uk

My advice would be to pick up a good 2.0 Sport and sort the suspension first and then enjoy it as it is for a short while to decide what to do. While they're not really that fast you'll be surprised how good they are with just the suspension tweaks.
When I supercharged my mk1 mx5 the insurance only went up about 15%.

I'll add to that advice. Don't buy a leggy one. The one I bought the other week with 124,000 on it seems to have just suffered oil ring failure. Trying decide to break it or put another engine in it.
