I want to fit an LSD to my 1.8 mk1. I would consider a used Type 1 with a refresh or brand new. So far I've noticed Quaife and Kaaz. Are there any others?
What is the best quality, best performing and longest lasting?
Thanks!

Ps, for fast road use mainly / rear canoe out fun, maybe auto solo or trackday at some point, but not full on drifting.

I'll probably just order a new Quaife unless anyone pipes up a better idea.

Probably worth looking out for a 4.3 Torsen if you're NA, and not in too much of a rush?

No rush.
Although I'd be interested to see how people rate the old parts to the new offerings?

I've got all the bits to build a 4.1 Torsen (type 1). Once done should be pretty much good as new. Could be a while though

Unless you're actually competing in motorsport a Kaaz or Quaife is a bit of a waste of money frankly. Used TorSens are fine. I've run them on several rave cars and had no issues.

The issue is finding the correct used item, then is it worn out and does it require refurbishment? The costs of the used items are far from cheap as it is. Factor in postage, refurbishment and the difference between new isn't vast.

For the purpose of this thread ignore the Super Fuji diffs from the 2002 onwards mk2.5 sports. While they lock up well, they can fail from damage on MOT brake tester rollers.
What you want is a type 1 or type 2 TorSen from a late 1.8 mk1s and early mk2s. These can be sourced from reputable breakers like junk yard dog. Other than fresh fluid there is no reason to refurbish these. They either work, or they don't. Like I said, I've run used TorSens in race Mx5's running 200 and 300 bhp and never broken one. A good friend ran a TorSen for doing Gymnkhana in a mk2, thats some serious abuse, and it was fine.
Lastly if you buy a "new" diff all you are buying is the LSD element. You still need to pay someone to fit that in an "old" differential casing with the "old" crown wheel and pinion etc. This will probably cost you a fair chunk of extra money as the person fitting it needs to set it up correctly taking time. Skuzzle got a transmission place to fit one in a mk3 diff recently and it cost £500+ just for the fitting.
So, if you just want an LSD for fast road and trackday use you really don't need to worry about refurbishment etc. Just pick up a used TorSen of your prefered ratio and crack on. I can't remember off the top of my head if yours is 1.6 or 1.8. If it's 1.6 you'll need the prop and half shafts off a 1.8 car to run a 1.8 diff.
Hope that helps. :-)

Thanks for the info! Mine is a 1.8 £500 for fitting? Wow. I'd assume a couple of hundred. I heard the Quaife one was just a swop fit. Are the not "set up" out of the box? I guess the trouble in my mind is knowing if the unit is going to last. As you say, some will have been abused for years in 300bhp cars, then offered for sale. Potentially that is a gamble with quite a chunk of money, even used.

If you just want the bits to rebuild yourself, so you know you've got a good 20 years out of it, happy to sell them on. I was going to get it rebuilt as a spare but no use having stuff sitting about. Road and Race Transmissions in Kent would be my recommended place to get it built.

Is thed difference between 3.9, 4.1 and 4.3 diffs just the gearing, and therefore improved acceleration but lower top speed / less relaxed cruising?
Gears and all that technical stuff makes my head hurt lol
