So, with apologies for posting a non-5 related problem
The short version is this:
- Missus' car currently runs OEM 15" wheels. The fronts are currently, er, 'around' the 1.6mm mark...
- Selection of new tyres in 15" in the correct size is craaaaap (not a common size so no recent/good tyres made).
- 17s is where decent tyres start now...
- ... ergo I thought I'd upgrade to 17" wheels and tyres and be done with, as they look better on this particular car and it will stop better on better tyres. (Putting to one side wheel weight affects etc.)
- I checked other OEM rims available, one looked like direct fit (correct offset / PCD / centre bore).
- I ordered said 17s and ordered some decent tyres for them.
I got to the tyre supply/fitting place today with said 17" wheels and the guy didn't want to fit them - he said the lug nuts stick out too much and might not have enough threads gripping the wheel stud.
In the end he put two of the 17s on (as they came with acceptable but crap tyres) to replace the knackered fronts (no points please, Mr Police Officer) but that was it.
It seems the centre section of the wheel is 'fatter', so it's a bigger distance between the face against the hub and the bottom of the holes in the face of the wheel and there isn't so much wheel stud sticking out.
So...
The main questions are:
- how much wheel stud thread is needed for a nut to have sufficient, safe purchase on it?
- Can I / should I buy new, longer nuts with increased Shank Depth so there is more nut gripping the thread?
- Or even change the wheel studs? (likely ££££)
- Or do I just admit defeat and buy some mediocre 15" tyres and put the OEM knackered alloys back on? (Continentals, most probably.)
- if I order another set of 17s, perhaps some Team Dynamics if I screw the plastic debt how do I know the face depth won't be an issue?? (I guess this question is true of any alloy on any car??)
I guess the new wheels do seem heavy as fook compared to the originals, which is not good for handling, so I'm going to weigh both and check the difference.
I guess I'll also try to measure the face depth to see if I can see a difference?
Why is nothing simple - it's taken ages for me to get to this point and now something gets in the way again
If I had limitless cash I'd have just ordered the Pro Race 1.2s and been done with, but doing things on the cheap (i.e. to a budget) seems to massively complicate things unless you just don't give a canoe
Rant/moan over anyway, any help gratefully received!!
