I'm fairly sure they are a bit cheaper than that! I haven't seen/heard any other 4-2-1 manifolds so it is perhaps this that makes them sound *so* good, and better than every alternative I've ever heard on a '5, rather than anything further down the line.

Can anyone explain how the different manifold layouts work / affect performance/sound?? It seems like black magic to me lol

One on eBay at the moment, dirt cheap with 13 hours left. Was tempted but I'm skint...

It seems like black magic to me lol Skuzzles the man to talk to but from what I'm aware a 4 to 1 mani provides a little back pressure making not as many pony's and a quieter sound (these are standard on 5s obviously aftermarket ones are larger bore so slightly more pony's and more noise) then 4-2-1 provides minimal resistance so slightly less torque but more power, flames and louuuuddddd noiiiisseeessss

Thanks for the explanation!

Thanks for the explanation! Scrap that I got it backwards 4-1 gives improved top end power and less backpressure 4-2-1 gives more mid range power so basically moves the power curve down. Unless it's a really good one (maxim works and racing beat are the two best) which can also help at top end too

I did a video while doing some bits on the car this morning. For peeps that want to know how it sounds with a decat...

I would love to press play on the button but managed to win a battle of getting my son to sleep (9.5 months old) and don't wanna wake him. I'll check it out later but thanks for posting did you do the decat at the same time. I'm just curious to how much more noise removing the cat makes? On my old mk1 I fitted the decat at the same time as a racing beat exhaust so I can't work out how much noise each one made.

Nah, I replaced my cat before getting the cobalt.
Sounded a bit horrible with a decat and stock exhaust!

I love the appearance and sound of my Cobalt backbox on my NC. Sooooo much lighter than the OEM muffler too. Ps. this is also my 1st post. Hi everyone!

I've got their manifold and twin exit backbox. Nicely made stuff. I went for GoodWin racing for the midpipe. Purely because mine is a Mk 2.5 with the cat as part of the exhaust manifold and the GoodWin pipe has an integral cat (so gets round losing the standard one when replacing the exhaust manifold). I'm very pleased with the sound (sporty but not too noisy). A propos of nothing in particular, I've also got a Cobalt three point front strut brace and 2 point rear one. Also well-made. Where did you get your midpipe from? I have a 2.5 and its such a ball ache trying to get an exhaust system, I have the cobalt on the back but just looking for something a little louder as you cant really hear the cobalt

Apologies for the slow reply. Not on here often these days. My GoodWin Racing midpipe came from Track Dog Racing, although others (maybe even Moss ?) sell this part. Its got a cat in the front section and a resonator about 2/3 of the way along the pipe. Used together with the Cobalt 4:2:1 manifold and twin exit backbox, it gives a nice exhaust sound. The lead to the lambda sensor is apparently long enough to reach the sensor, which sits further away from the engine in its new location.

Thread revival!
Sounds like I need a new zorst - are people still happy with their Cobalts? Are there any other good alternatives? Want something sporty but not too loud/intrusive.
My new to me mk1 seems to have an aftermarket manifold, and Mazdaspeed mid/rear section (not sure if manifold is also Mazdaspeed)
I will probably retain CAT as its a 95'. Is there anything I need to measure to ensure I get the right size zorst?
