Yeah, those half shafts would need to be pulled out in order to see through the middle of the diff. Unfortunately, the square flanged halfshaft stubs don't tell you what kind of diff you have, because they come from an earlier car than any 3.6 differential. Those square flanged axle stubs were only used up to about 1995. After that, Mazda switched to using a single piece shaft without the flanged join in the middle. And they didn't begin fitting 3.6 diffs until several years later in the Mk.2 era when they started offering 6-speed gearboxes. The flanged stubs do just pop out though. For certain values of 'just'. There's a wire snap ring which keeps them in place but with a bit of determination and bloodymindedness you can just yank them out.

Thanks for all the advice and thoughts. Think for now I will stay with the original factory LSD.

Maybe irrelevant now, but it just came to me that there's a very quick check to see if that's a torsen or Fuji: can you turn the stub axles opposite ways by hand?
With a torsen it's easy, as there's no lockup when it's not under load and feels just like an open differential. With a Fuji it should be really hard because of the preload springs.
<edit to add> PS I think it's probably a good call to pass on the offer. The 3.6 is indeed a great diff, but really only for cars with lots more torque than standard.

Absolutely no resistance at all, although feels very smooth which is a good thing. As I said I love to learn and need to learn about the MX5. Anyway just when you lovely people thought you were done with me on this section of the forum . . . . . . I have a hole new bunch of questions regarding the gear box, and diff. Stay tuned !!
