Without going into all the nitty gritty details, I've had a lot of spare time while on holiday to spend thinking about my current situation with the rusty MX5 and the new non-rusty one I've bought and the plan to merge the two into one super awesome MX5.
The issue is that my finances aren't in the state I hoped they would be by this point in the year and I've got a few adult based expenditures I need to make this year so I can't afford to blow a huge chunk of cash.
I don't have a garage, or anywhere else to work, or really the required tools to do all the work myself so I have enlisted Skuzzle to do the work, but what I thought was going to cost me about £1k is actually going to cost me in excess of about £3k which is a lot of money. On top of that I've paid decent money for the white (rust free) car.
I'm open, I don't mind sharing what I've spent, but the act of thinking about it and writing it down has made realise that I think it's just too much.
Original purchase price of car was nearly £3k once you add in the new hood and some of the little things I needed to do.
Since then I've spent just over £2k in maintenance over the last (just under) 2 years, the majority of it has been strip down of engine to replace all the seals, rear subframe removal to replace leaky fuel tank, ARB droplinks, alignment bolt replacement and alignment, and throttle body tune up and dyno.
So after adding the cost of the white car and expected cost of doing all the work at Skuzzle, the total cost to me including original purchase price and maintenance will be about £10,000.
I'll have a load of parts leftover which I can probably sell for about £1k but still, I'll have a car that has cost me £9,000.
My last MX5 which I sold to fund the purchase of the grey MX5 cost me £3k before I eventually sold it. The head cracked and I had it replaced with an expensive BLiNK head, but the local MX5 "specialist" I got to fit the BLiNK head botched it and I had to take it to Skuzzle to remedy the work the local place did (probably should have just got straight to Skuzzle in the first place).
Over 5 years I'll have spent £12k, and altogether I think I'll have had MX5s off the road for 2 of those years while saving money to get work done.
If I cut my losses now and sell the white one and break the grey one I think I can make about £4k, I'll probably have to pay Skuzzle about £500 (or maybe more) in storage fees, since the grey one has been there since December, but at least I'll have £3,000 - £3,500 to just buy something else without having to throw more money down now.
Thoughts?
