Hi all, Currently in the last stages of rear brake caliper servicing.. Now at the stage of adjusting the handbrake. Ns grips well and holds.. OS the leaver (shown below me pointing at it) moves with the cable but nothing happens with the caliper in terms of it locking. Is there anything I can do or is internal caliper failure where by I need to replace? I've adjusted with the 4mm Allen key, but the handbrake does nothing on this side. . i.imgur.com/ZHRwCDC.jpg [/Img]

The calipers are fairly easy to strip down and replace the internals. What's the state of the end of the adjuster (that you put the 4mm allen key in)? They're made of a soft material and the teeth can strip, so you're not actually able to adjust the handbrake. You can pull it out from the outside with the allen key and a bit of patience normally - looks like this:

Adjuster splines are good, they work - as the pads are able to be adjusted.. Just nothing working when handbrake actuator is moved.

How did you go about setting the handbrake? From memory, the procedure is handbrake off, tighten the adjuster fully and then back it off a third - half a turn.

That's exactly what i did.. other side grips fine upon braking and applying handbrake.. O/S however had the same theory applied; the handbrake cable pulls and the actuator moves like the N/S, but doesn't move the piston from what i can see..
I'm at a loss here lmao

I'm at a loss here lmao Sounds like quite the pickle. Only other thing I can think of is that the pin that sits between the mechanism that connects to the cable and the screw that pushes against the piston is somehow not touching: I don't think there's an easy way of checking that without taking the caliper off the car and stripping it down.

When you tighten the adjuster does it actually go tight to indicate the piston is pressing against the disk? If so I'd suggest you check that the actuator moves through the same angle on both calipers. After dealing with the useless handbrake on my newish Mk.1 I had to spend quite a time dicking around with the handbrake cable adjustments to get the full range of movement on both sides. Huge improvement once it was done.

My car kept failing on this issue at the last MOT.
Few months prior I had new rear calipers fitted. Come MOT time it failed on handbrake balance, so off it went back to the garage for adjustment. upon picking it up it felt fine, but by the time I got back to the MOT station I could tell it wasn't right, and it failed the re-test.
This happened AGAIN, and in the end the garage had to replace the caliper under warranty. No problem since.
