Bit confused about this.
I have a standard license post 1997 which means I can't properly tow anything.
However the regs say that anybody with a regular license can tow as long as the combined weight is less than 3500kg...
So in theory, that means an mx5 + trailer can tow another mx5?

except that an mx5 will have a very low train weight (ie the amount it can tow) generally the trailer weight has to be less than the towing vehicle (for cars) and anything over 750kg must have brakes, i think 750kg is max for a mk1 anyway I read somewhere that the towing weight for later cars is specified as 0kg!!
you are right - you can drive up to 3500kg in total.

You will need to find a car to tow with which has a low gross train weight French cars tend to be good for this, there are a few with low train weight be pecify you can tow up to say 1400kg with 1 person in the car. But really do the trailer test and you can do what you like with respect to cars and towing, pays to have a tow car that is heavier than what you are pulling so you don't end up with the tail wagging the dog
