Hi all,
Just found this place, relatively new to 5's but have been through 2 already, here's my story so far:
This was the first 5 I bought, for a measely £500:
It was rotten as hell but was a good base for me to learn how to work on cars and to see if I enjoy MX5's.
I collected some parts
And took a few photos
Then the real fun began
Flyin Miata stage 1 from the USA
GCR2
Some rude arches with rolled on paint
This was its 'final state':
And then......
AND the headgasket went. Was looking at a big big job to fix both the rust and the engine, so I pulled all the bits off, scrapped the shell and bought this:
Went straight to work with Doug from G19 and ended up with:
Found some broken bits:
But also some Bilstein shocks!
Got the exhaust and wheels fitted:
The electric window broke, fully down, just before it rained:
Found some dodgy wiring and fixed it
And curbed a wheel!
Here she is now:
Current Spec:
1996 MX5 Mk1 1.8
Power Windows
Manual Steering
3.9 Torsen diff
IHI VF35 Turbo
G19 Cast Manifold
G19 Downpipe
G19 Decat
RX8 Injectors
Flyin' Miata stage 1 clutch
Sparco Sprint seats
OMP 6 Point drivers & 4 point passenger harnesses
Cobalt 2.5" cat-back
HSD Monopro Coilovers
15x8 ET0 Rota Grid
195/50 Toyo Proxes cRap
Current Issues:
Misfire > 6500RPM
Diff leaking oil
Brake pedal rumbles under hard braking (feels like warped disc)
Wheels poke out too much
Needs alignment
Parts ready to fit:
EBC Yellowstuff pads
Blueprinted discs
NGK heat rating 7 spark plugs
Jackson Racing HT leads
Diff side seal
GCR2 roll bar
So next I need to attempt to fit the new diff seal, having never really done anything diff related I'm a little aprehensive but it doesn't seem like the hardest job in the world. Also need to fit the new brakes to fix the pedal wobble, I might invest in a master cylinder brace as well at some point. The sketchiest thing on my list is the misfire, hopefully the new plugs + leads will fix the problem. Also need to either commit to selling/swapping these wheels and find something ET20ish OR roll the arches to fit the ET0 wheels under. Ideally I want some RPF1's but I don't think I can afford them at the moment.
Once its all ready (hopefully before the end of September) I'll be getting it on a track somewhere to give the car a proper shakedown and see how it performs.
