Now that my mk1 has another years MOT (somehow with 'surface corrosion / tender outer sills') I want to make it slightly less annoying to drive for long distances. I've just started a new job, which is approx 1hr each way (Luckily its a pretty decent run up towards Oxford down the A4074!), so I'm spending a few hours a day sat in it.
If I leave aside the fact I've just got a Music Production degree, I know bugger all about car audio etc.
I'm thinking a decent set of door speakers, probably Focal's, and a CarPlay head unit. Do I want to be looking at a Amp and possibly some sort of underseat sub? I'm also considering pulling the interior to clean it up (last owner had awful wiring practises) and get some Dynamat (or something similar) in there to make it a little nicer/hopefully sort some of the rattles (and the fact that it sounds like its about to explode anything over 60mph).
Are there any areas that are just prone to being noisy and want addressing? I've absolutely got to do the gear shift gaiter soon, but other than that I'm nor sure where to start.
Want to make the car a 'best of OEM' kinda deal, so not looking to do anything ground breaking.
Any thoughts?

First rule of audio in a 5: accept it will never be great With that out the way, what I did was remove the head unit altogether and just plug my iPhone in to an amp. Check my build thread (Libby) page 6 to see how I mounted the amp, it's a great spot and easy to do. Door speakers - if you have crash pad tweeters, any mids, if not, don't get separates as most aftermarket tweeters don't look as good as the OE ones! I was going to put lead flashing on the doors but never got around to it. Whatever you do don't use boom mat speaker cups. Dreadful idea.
