...help me make them I picked my NA up from the MX5 Restorer yesterday with a new o/s rear quarter and a clean bill of health. Well until it starts rusting somewhere else! I'm just not sure what way to go next. I don't want FI but I quite like the 1600 lump. It's just not quite quick enough. Management will be a must for more serious mods I know but do I stop at the Skuzzle afm and timing mod or do I do cams or itbs? I don't want to do both to be honest... Money talks and that. That leaves me stuck with the interior... Racey Sparco fixed back seats or Cobra Classic RS seats? I love the look but am I just being misty eyed over the Elan or air cooled 911 I desperately want but will never have? I fear the Cobras won't support me in the way the standard seats don't. Not that I'm ever going to race it. Whilst I'm on the interior, do I wait for a s/h Cusco or is that being daft when a new GCF won't be much more. I don't want a cross brace but GCF said they can do a bar without no problems. Will a Cusco even fit under a hard top? Basically I'm rambling. I'm sorry My mrs won't listen though. She keeps telling me to piss off!

Aftermarket management will get the most out of your engine...even without many other mods. Cams plus management won't change the character of the engine much, while ITBs will add glorious noise. Afm and timing mod done on the rolling road is well worth it, and not too expensive - perhaps think about getting that done and a jackson racing cold air intake at the same time
Go and try out some bucket seats before choosing. Looks aren't everything and comfort is very personal
Cusco cage reduces cabin space as it bolts to the floor. Gcf and tr lane etc which don't bolt to the floor are preferred in my opinion as you retain full seat movement. Cusco does fit with hardtop, but you will have to run no side latches or use fixed Jass ones which you have to unbolt the cage to be able to remove (i have a safety21 cage which is identical to Cusco while Bambi has a TR Lane cage)
Don't forget that cage and buckets means harnesses too

I know you said you don't want to but FI really transforms the MX5. Last year I had a Mk1 on ITBs, MS, cams etc. Made a nice noise but wasn't that quick- but it used to beat Elans.

Supercharger doesn't change characteristics like a turbo does, but itb is more N/A-esque.

I did Megasquirt -> ITBs -> cams across a couple of years.
Everyone says ITBs add very little in terms of performance, and that's probably correct. However, fitting them made my throttle so much snappier and more fun to drive. I fitted some HKS cams, and they really added some torque from 2500-6000rpm.
I'd start with management to be honest. It lets you get rid of the AFM for a start...

The trouble with FI is you soon get used to the extra powers, and you go through more clutches, you may want bigger brakes, then you will want better cooling, oh and then more powers.....etc etc.

Thanks for the help everyone I think this has really helped... I think a trip to Skuzzle is in order first off. I may do the small mods for now and put the money towards a roll bar for now. Then look into tuning after looking into what I really want. I've not been in anything other than a standard MX5 so maybe that'd be a good place to start. Thanks for the info on the roll bar. I really want a Cusco but I don't think it'd suit my seating position. Same with the seats. I don't really want harnesses so that info really helped too. Thanks again

Have a chat with him first to get his opinion and shape your plans before you jump in I think I will. He's only 20 minutes away. I'll call ahead first though... Really don't want to be a nuisance! I've decided I'm going to get a TR Lane GP roll bar. Comes without the cross brace which is cool. I like it in silver too. Although it's £200 direct or £270 from MX5 Parts. What's that all about??!

Mx5 parts are a profit-making company with a large customer base that don't look elsewhere for parts...I guess
