So i just fitted a new non dented boot lid and noticed the silver one i took off weighed a lot more than the non dented black one i put on,looks like the black one is alloy and the silver one is steel. My question is which models were fitted with alloy then or was/is it a bit random? What`s yours?

I tought Mrs Precision to drive in my old Mk2.5 (Lucky her) and could we Canoe get the 'L' plates to stick to the bonnet or the boot. Not sure what that signifies... HTH

I was under the impression all 5 boot kids were steel. Interesting!

I've been gooooogling this because I've nothing much else to do this afternoon, and haven't really been able to find reference to any mx5's mk1 - 2.5 with aluminium boots. There was mention of a run of 300 special editions of some sort in Japan that did but nothing else Randy, it's weird you couldn't get the L-plates to stick to Mrs Precisio's bonnet or boot. Strange.

I got the magnet out, cardo wins, the old dented silver one i took off had an extra load of filler in it,the new one i fitted doesn`t hence being much lighter. The difference was very noticable when i swapped them over,i just presumed/hoped the new one was aluminium,it isn`t.

I am pretty sure magnetic roundels wouldn't fix to my old mk2's bonnet.
Whatever that adds to the conversation.

Not sure about MK2 bonnets, but i recently ended up with 3x MK1 bonnets, they all appear to be aluminium skinned,so presume MK2 ones are as well, which would explain the magnetic roundels not sticking on? So a new question then,is your bonnet aluminium skinned and on which MK? If nothing else,it gets you out and about with a magnet to check,so you can check your arches/sills for steel/filler at the same time, i would make sure you put a bit of cotton or cloth on the face of the magnet to avoid scratching the paintwork though.

All the oem mk1 bonnets were ally. Some aftermarket replacement ones were steel. All oem Mk2 bonnets were steel.
