Howard is in Classic Marques and can pedal which helps his performance , also most good 1B rubber has been barred or pushed to 1C, so the difference between good 1B and 1A is small these days for sprinting.

You're still not going to convince me that Rainsports are a better tyre for sprints than R888 SG compound But I think your point is valid, Howard can pedal, and a 'more expensive' machine doesn't necessarily make for a more competitive machine and there are so many variables between different cars/drivers that saying 'well, x is good on y tyres, so that must be true for me' is difficult. Also, I think people expect seconds difference, which, on a 40s (hopefully less) drag up Gurston really isn't that likely, there's more likely to be more time in just driving better! Like the current 'magic' Extreme tyres - why haven't people been smashing their PBs on these?...

No I am not saying that, he would be even quicker with those 888 tyres, how much quicker is the question, for me I got very little extra from the 1B rubber and can assure you I was finding the limit of the tyre but as you rightly say it is hard to compare 1 time to the next even with your own times due to external variables like weather, track conditions and your own performance after not visiting the venue for a year.
We need a friendly tyre supplier and a track to do some back to back testing to get some definitive answers, the tyre that comes out on top would sell boatloads
I also chose AD08R which I'm told is a bit of a compromise anyway so it might be I can find more with a 888 or PS2Cup etc, difficult to know as like Howard I seem to do a good job what ever is on the car compared to others on supposedly stickier stuff. The Extremes are interesting, I've yet to see someone consistently quick use them, Dave newman might provide some creditable data this year, there is quite a cult following, having had a touchy feely session with them at Blyton, they seem like the should do the job, they get hot and sticky in the time frame of a short sprint, picking up everything in the paddock whereas mine remained stone cold despite being the fastest car in class.
Not sure I could bring myself to buy the Extremes though despite how good they seem, I prefer to stick to know brands.

Was trying to be as diplomatic as possible.... They were better than most that was around at the time. Tyre tech moves on though- I would’ve never had thought I would be beating people on R888s with a set of Kumho V70As, in fact they’re so good that the MSA have effectively banned them from road use A couple of weeks ago I was beating very expensive cars through the corners on my Rainsports. Where do you race? In what comp? Info here mighty5s.com/thread/2321/classic-marques-2018-dates-provisional

Im in the same boat re the Extremes. Im not overly keen on a re tread and Ive heard about big differences in weight per tyre... not exactly conducive to a what you want on a competition car. Richard Brant who runs a potent Clio in road going at a national level will be a good yard stick , as I think he's switched over to these , I know Steven Moore Gurston record holder in >2000cc is also pondering a switch. SG R888 are very hard to come by now days. Im wondering about trying some Nankang AR1s... Theres a quick guy in a celica who runs them on the hills. Might have to have a chat next time I see him. Anybody got any experience of AR1s?

The Mugglestones run AR1 on there Orange thing for Sprints/Hills, they are quick (as in win a lot) and consistent with them on a low weight car, they are the type to test most things, so I'd imagine that is a fair endorsement for use in Sprints, but again, hard to really know, If winning classes was an indicator then everyone would be looking at CSC5 and RS3 based on mine and Howards experience I'd imagine you might have an easier time switching them on than they do with your 5 being heavier and with more torque, who knows though, it's a bit of a lottery, you'd be just as well to put all names of tyres you are interested in, in a hat and taking a pick

As has been said, where are you going to get R888 SG these days as they have been out of production at least 3 years. Having raced on AR1 and tested on them, despite what the Internet says, I would not expect them to have any sort of heat to do hill climb or short sprints. As for Extreme, they qualify as a 1B tyre as remoulds are exempt from label info. As with all remoulds the info that they give about being repeatable and consistent can only be as good as the car carcass's they use. I have yet to know a remould that has the came casing through production.
