ISTR it was a faulty weld on the steering column that caused Ayrton Senna’s accident

It's not the column itself that is welded, it's the splined connection on the pinion. If the weld were to fail (it won't if done properly), you'd be just back to where you were before, with the slightly loose fitting splines. Needs to be very carefully done so as not to cause it to distort and run out of true. Not visible at MOT time. Some good pictures in this: www.miataforumz.com/how-40/how-power-steering-delete-542/page2/

I see what your doing now...

DIY, just be sensible about the mount of heat you put into it so it doesn't distort. How would the MOT man find out? this part is hidden in the rack itself...

Me? DIY? That would be dangerous lol I have emailed a chap, though, and he has quoted about £100 for TIG welding (with care, to avoid heat distortion) - I've not idea how reasonable that is!

as someone thats been a professional welder (actually a machinist first ) I find the welding of hardened gears / shafts in a sorta important steering component a little un-nerving , personally I'd look at pinning the 2 sections to stop the 'slop' although as this weld-fix seems to be common & popular without reported failures then I guess its on the builders / drivers choice Rich.

A total rip off? It'll take all of 10min to weld that up... (having done 2 myself) that's a rate of £600/hr! I'm in the wrong business!! This is the problem with 1offs I guess...

If you aren't too far, ask Skuzzle if he can do it

ISTR it was a faulty weld on the steering column that caused Ayrton Senna’s accident Actually, the column was machined down in diameter along a section of it so it could be lowered(?) at Senna's request and not foul on the FIA test for cockpit exit. This design change was rushed and with no thought to adding stress relieving rounds was given so it was a straight cut that showed some signs of fatigue failure but no total failure even after the accident. (It could have failed at some point...) This also wasn't likely to be the cause of the accident as the data showed steering torque up until the moment he went off... more likely a loss of down force and an over-correction on steering input. Interesting, but not relevant here!

lol
Cheers for the input!
This guy seems to specialise in really fiddly, small welds so might well have specialist rates.
So if you've done two... do you want to do another? lol
(And can you confirm that it makes a good difference??!)

A properly depowered rack is great, obviously its heavy af at parking speeds but once moving really nice to drive and much quicker than the manual rack.
Promise not to sue me if it ever failed?! Yeah I wouldn't mind, I'd much rather do it for you than let you pay some joker £100!

Once it's loaded up in a corner, I like the feel through the wheel
It's the wandering around with changing cambers that I don't like - that and the fact that it dives to one side under heavy braking!
Would be awesome if you were game for welding
I think I need to find another column or a whole steering rack, so then I could get any welding done and swap it over in one day!
