I bought this sight unseen from ebay for £721. It only has 2 months MOT but a great history with some easily rectified problems. Not one for writing really so will be doing video build updates. The first one is here

Loving the video build thread approach!

That looks in great nick, and a bargain! That's not a standard colour, is it?? It's was originally white, it had the colour change before import. The colour is growing on me.

Another mini update finishing the wheels, tearing off that stupid lotus badge and bodging the exhaust. A few episodes behind with a future episode examining the 36 (only 4) chambers

I failed with the youtube build thread, I just don't have time with family, business and the usual prarrie canoe. So i'm reverting back to the classic forum thread. I've done a fair bit over the last few weeks/months so I'll try and put this in some sort of order, mainly for my benefit. So to recap, I got the MK1, first thing I did was the usual. Make it look better, I got a bargain hardtop and painted the wheels. I played with a few bits and started inspecting more of the chassis, suspension and body work. I really want to clear up the rust on the swing arms etc. and the chassis rails are a bit knackered where I think someone has jacked the car up with them previously, so I'm considering new chassis rails. The previous owner repaired the off side side rear sill and did a good job but the near side still needs replacing, I'll probably start on the towards the end of the summer. The main concern was the engine as it was running a bit lumpy and a compression test showed that cyclinder two was really low with no improvement with a wet test so I was pretty sure it was a valve problem. So I took the head off ready to send to a machine shop and get it skimmed and the valves re-seated. I hate this chrome cam cover, if anyone want to swap for a regular mk1 1.8 then PM me. I just want a painted one. The cam cover came off, the cam profiles looked good. I don't have a garage at the moment so everything has to be done late at night outside which is pretty limiting but i'm getting there slowly. Head and gasket came off ok but I think the gasket was starting to go as some parts of it were left loose on the block, at first I was concerned this was part of a piston ring but the cylinders all seem good and no scoring so it's very unlikely. The exhaust valves in 1 and 2 look quite burnt and are not seating quite right so this will get sent to a local machine shop, I've also requested a 1mm skim in addition to valve re-seating and polishing and valve seals to be replaced. So now I'm just waiting for the gasket set to arrive and I can take the head to get worked on. In the mean time I'll be working on the suspension and brakes.

Just took the head in for some work. Gonna get a 1mm skim, re-seat all vavles and replace any that are damaged, check ports for any burrs, install new valve seals and give it a clean up. Should hopefully get it back next week. So now I just need to finish off cleaning the top of the block, finish the A/C delete, order new belts, coolant and clean the engine bay. Hopefully get it back on the road in the next four weeks.

Good work!
1mm skim is (according to the internetz), what, 39thou? I think 50thou is about the absolute safe limit before interference issues crop up, isn't it?? (Can't remember the figure but I'm sure it's a bit more than 40thou...)
Can you get the head measured beforehand, to check if any has been skimmed off previously? Wouldn't want to do a 1mm skim if someone's already done one!

The head is unmolested it appears with plenty of room for a skim. From what I understand it'll need a slight timing retard after the skim.

Boooo, bring back Imperial! I'd be paying in £/s/d if I could Ha! I was born in the metric era (just) BUT served my apprentaceship in a machineshop where the lathes / mills etc. were all Imperial so I 'think' in Miles/Yards/Ft/Inches & 'Thou one of my tools is a 'Box-Of-Inches' (tape-measure ) anyway, back to cylinderheads........ are you having the valve-guides checked &/or replaced? something thats sometimes forgotten or ignored Rich.

I grew up in the states and like you did my engineering course in the UK so have been brainwashed into the world of fractions and feet. But I have been individually pursuing the true path, I have a 25cm rule tattooed on my forearm, the most useful tattoo I could ever have, i use it daily. Anyhoo
Yeah, he's checking them and will replace as necessary. I basically told him what my problem with it was, he confirmed my suspicians, i.e valves and will re-seat and check all guides. Hopefully this will now run sweet as a nut. Very excited!

*Must* resist making comments of 10" tattoo on forearm Rich.
