Hello, I have recently had a strong urge to finally get myself a project car and i have set my heart on a little MX5, i don't have the car yet, i'm in the research stages, doing my homework properly before i make an investment. I have absolutely zero knowledge about working on cars but hey we have to start somewhere right? Hense why i'm here! I shall be asking silly and obvious questions but hopefully ill make some good friends and get the advice i seek! I'll keep it short for now, just saying my hello's

I had absolutely no idea how to work on cars before I got my mx5. I've managed to convert the car from automatic to manual, up to cam belt and water pump. So don't be afraid. I still pretty much know nothing

Get yourself a workshop manual for the appropriate year/model once you've bought one - it's really useful as is the Rod Grainger (Granger??) book. The Haynes manual is apparently a bit crap lol, so don't bother with that! There is a good manual hosted online, though - have a search for 'mellens' and the link(s) should pop up

have you an idea as to what mark your interested in? 5's are big meccano kits, the mecanical & electrical jobs are reasonably idiot-proof, the body / rust issues are less diy (worth checking the mot history) as to project car, the sky (& bank ballance) are the limit Rich.

It's a great project car to start with, loads of help online, loads of parts, loads of experts, loads of fun. You will come across rust, it is curable but is probably the hardest and most time consuming repair on a 5 (unless you can weld! Mk1s - its sills and wheel arches and is not too bad to deal with, mk2s - it's the front chassis rails also and that is a bigger job but still repairable. If you are lucky enough to find one without rust but with mechanical problems then that is probably the holy grail of a mx5 project car😁 Enjoy

As everyone says, the MK1 & 2s are pretty simple cars, plus there’s lots around & bits are relatively cheap.

And depending where you live, there's usually a few fellow owners nearby who can lend a hand

Welcome to the site If I can swap an engine, you'll have nothing to fear (apart from rust!)

Welcome! Good luck with your search and well all be on hand to hell you if you need it.
I taught myself spannering on classic minis, the Mx5 isn’t much more complex.

I'm not sure many of us are from up your way, but if you ever need welding/body repair work done, myself and FFS Corders highly recommend Fat Fender over in Croston. Excellent work, really great service and all within budget. Like everyone else has said, MX5s are reasonably easy with a little bit of help and the courage to get stuck in, knowing there's always people willing to help in the community of 5s.
