Hi All
A quick question/opinions needed.
I have just got my NA Eunos back on the road, and am trying to put some miles under its belt. I'm a bit underwhelmed by the steering feel though. To me, the PAS makes it very light (though I am comparing it to my old TVR S3 which was a manual rack), and not very confidence inspiring through the bends.
I have just had a wheel alignment done (only to factory specs - nothing more focused), and all the suspension bushes etc are brand new OEM parts so that all should be in good order.
I am wondering whether this lightness is normal and whether to budget for a manual rack conversion at some stage or whether it just sounds like mine is a bit dodgy!
Any thoughts welcome...

Whereabouts are you in this fine land of ours? You might be able to get a drive of someone's manual rack or depowered PAS rack to compare the two I had mine depowered and I'm very happy with it - it's quite light at speed but gets heavier in the corners, so to me that feels more natural than steering that is always light. Parking is a bitch, as you would expect lol I think mine might get lighter when I get the track rods and slight play in the pinion sorted, though - at the moment it is a bit of a fight to keep it on one's intended path, so I'm hoping everything being as it should be will make it less scary and more consistent in weight/feel!

I was interested to have a drive in a non powered car, as all the purists have been banging on about how much better the car "feels" on the forums. So two weeks ago I saw a very low mileage UK car that had absolutely no powered goodies at all that was up for sale near me. So off I went to have a look. The car was in fantastic condition as you would imagine with only 29,000 miles on the clock. However, the rear sills had both been botched, and after driving it, as far as I'm concerned I wouldn't touch a non powered car with a barge pole. It was like driving a truck. Just my opinion of course.

my Eunos had been converted to non-assisted steering, something that the previous owner was quite proud about... So, not being someone that follows trends, I'm refitting PAS the pas rack has a quicker ratio than the manual rack so thats a good thing as to de-powering a rack, thats just making more work for the driver (also, as someone with an engineering background, the common method of 'welding' the pinion is not the way I'd go about this) I'm also going to look into adjusting the PAS pump's pressure to increase sensativity & lessen the assistance but that involves work & I'm comfy in the house so it may be a while before I find out if its easily done Rich.

Depowering the rack is a great way to have the feel of a manual rack but with a quicker ratio
Just don't do what Fizbne did and simply disconnect the PAS gubbins. That was reallly heavy at slow speeds
Personally, having used PAS, depowered and manual racks my favourite is the PAS rack in Bambi - a 1.6 1993 eunos which feel lovely and light but because of the alignment and suspension is really confidence inspiring when turning in hard

So this was a discussion at the autosolo last weekend, consensus seems to be don't do it unless you have a track car, each to their own, of course, also my wife drives my car, she's not that happy with bucket seats and lack of radio, PAS delete would not be popular!! On a tight Autosolo PAS is great as long as it's working to full efficiency. Some people notice quick lock to lock sometimes causes issues and the steering gets a bit "sticky" I think that is the pump starting to either cavitate or wear out. Good way to tell is if at full lock at idle the revs go up a lot (not just slightly). Also the mk1 reservoir often throws fluid out if you are turning a lot. My only issue at the Autosolo was my standard 370 Momo wheel, so I'm going t try a 320 Sparco, less movement on quick turns

And I also meant to say that I have not noticed a lack of feel on either of my mk1s. I would say that this is down to suspension geo or tyres or perhaps a failing PAS pump Also I replace the fluid every service

Cheers for all the replies.
I'm based in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, so if anyone is local and wouldn't mind me crawling all over their car i'd love to look around one as I have many questions along the lines of 'are they all like this, or just mine?'...!
In terms of the steering, the suspension should be in good nick as it's all new (although Emotion Racing coilovers are probably not ideal!). It also has new AD08Rs all round.
There may be a problem with the PAS, as doing a lap of a roundabout seems to make the steering pulse for want of a better word. Compared to my old TVR, it feels rubbish, which is a big surprise. But again, I don't know if that's just how they are (in which case I'd look at a manual rack) or if mines just broken (in which case I'll fix it).

I depowered my PAS rack properly, and it feels much better than before. Too light with PAS in my opinion. Anything about 5mph now and it feels spot on.
