A quick question for anyone who has done a gear shifter rebuild...
I have bought a moss rebuild kit, and everything is simple enough apart from fitting the nylon cup on the ball end of the shifter. The old one came off OK, but the new one is way too tight to do by hand. I tried a little oil on it, and then a small tap with a mallet, which somewhat predictably cracked it. I have ordered another two, but how have others done it without breaking the cup? Does it help to warm it up first, or did I just get a badly toleranced cup? Any help appreciated.

I think you went to the extreme of the mallet too quickly. I placed the cup on the work bench, then rested the ball end into the cup and used my body weight as a press to slowly push it in. I too used a little smidge of oil as lube.

I was probably a bit silly going to the mallet so soon in proceedings! Hopefully the new cup arrives soon.

All is well, my new cups came and I went for the 'controlled excess' approach of using my 10ton press! Worked perfectly!
You are all quite correct though, steady pressure was key.
