I've just set aside a couple of hours to install my 6x9s only to discover that the 'how to' thread I'd bookmarked over on Nutz has vanished. Balls.
Does anyone here have a similar guide or even an archived version of the one I'm looking for ?
It involved making spacers from thick ply and dremelling the inside of the speaker housing in the door card....
Cheers,

You need some of these, but the thickness depends on your speakers. Once you've decided on a thickness you can mark out where your speakers still foul and cut the rear shelf material away material away.

Thanks for the help mate, but the shape of the custom spacers needs to be well in excess of the shape of the speakers if that makes sense, to allow the position of the self tappers to reach the surrounding metalwork. I know the clearance required and I've got the correct thickness marine ply. I'll go down the trial and error route if I have to but that thread would have been a good guide. 'kin Nutz......

Are you fitting to a mk1? Best setup I had was some good mids and OEM tweeters in the crash pad. With a basic crossover and a 2 way amp this handled everything. Decent enough bass, enough volume and clarity. I got some mdf spacers, had a 45 degree angle cut around the edge to fit in the recess, and then fitted the chunkiest speaker money could buy. The magnet was so big it fouled the door tie 😂 plan was to soundproof but never got round to it...

Its a Mk2 lads, I've currently got some JBL 6.5" in the doors but they are just not cutting it. The plan is to swap them out for 6x9's (as 'theres no replacement for displacement') then build the JBL's into the wind blocker. I'll be boxing them in at the rear, covering with beige acoustic fabric then spraying the front covers with beige plasticote before refitting the mesh net so they should be fairly well hidden. Dynamat the doors and Roberts your mothers brother !

Sounds nice. I'm sure there'll be a few people interested in a how-to guide if you did one.
