So, with no planning whatsoever, I'm going to drive to all extemes of the Isles in the next few days, setting off from near Swindon via north Wales, avoiding motorways all the way and roof down, what should I detour to see and anyone fancy a drink shout up..

I'd recommend as much of the west coast section of the NC500 route as you can, include Isle of Skye in that as well (Old man of Storr road). If you're wanting to go as far as John'o'Groats, go via the west coast, then turn round and come back the way you came, the east coast part isn't anywhere near as good.

I can't remember if evo detailed some good driving routes at some point, but IIRC the IAM have done some short articles in their members' magazine about good places to drive, which may (or, more likely...) may not be on their website.
The 'evo triangle' is quite well documented and rated highly, so do that!
The B660 (from end to end) is another great road.
