Might be your slave cylinder/clutch fluid system in general

Thank you for the reply! I got back into it after stopping off for a couple of hours at a pre-planned engagement and, er, no gears. Nil. Nada. Zeroooo. lol Had to put it in first gear and rolling start it, slip (grind...) it into second, then drive the whole way home in second, doing my very best to plan ahead and not need to brake / stop Given it seems to have got worse all on its own while stopped, perhaps I'm leaking clutch fluid?? I have done some, er, 'exploring' of byways recently, one of which was somewhat grindy on the floorplan at points... lol I shall have to break out the Workshop Manual and see if it's something I can diagnose / fix!

I'd just look for the faulty part and just replace that, unless you're in the upgrade/renew everything mindset. Hydraulic hoses rarely fail nowadays, so start by having a good poke about and see if you can see any leaks from the master cylinder. To do this you'll have to look inside the driver's footwell where the clutch master cylinder comes through the bulkhead. If there are no visible leaks from the master cylinder then it's probably the slave. Once you're under the car you'll have good access to the slave cylinder. Pull the rubber dust shield away from the body of the cylinder and (chances are) if it is leaking there will be a build-up of fluid inside the rubber.

We fitted the £12 one to Bambi about 18 months ago and it is still going strong, but if you use the car fairly often you should probably get an OEM/better reviewed one. Moss stock slave cylinders too www.moss-europe.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?search_group=8989&q=slaveChances are it will only be the slave that's the problem anyway so I would change that first then start on the more expensive bits if it doesn't fix it after a good bleed Weigh up your opinions on braided lines too. Freakyparts offer a HEL braided line that goes from master to slave which reduces a lot of the length of line freakyparts.co.uk/products/hel-braided-clutch-bypass-hose

Thanks for these pictures!
I contorted myself into the most uncomfortable positions known to man to assess the situation behind the pedals and all looked dry, so moving on to the slave cylinder, it was covered in greasy crap so tried to clean it off with tissue paper. Having done so, even just wiping the rubber boot clean saw the tissue paper going see-through from liquid, so I think we have our culprit...
The reservoir was also completely empty, though my head is struggling to relate the master cylinder location in the engine bay with the location of the pushrod behind the pedals - the latter seems far lower than the former! lol
Anyway, some quick questions before I order stuff, if that would be okay!
- I assume DOT4 or DOT5 brake fluid doesn't matter, as long as I flush the original stuff fully? (assuming there's any left in the system...) - Does the pushrod in the slave cylinder, as hidden by the rubber boot, just 'push-fit' into the Piston/Cup assembly (as shown attached to the spring in the repair kit picture: www.mx5parts.co.uk/images/prod_img/si206.jpg)? - I assume the Piston/Cup assembly and the spring just push into the cylinder body? And both the cylinder body and Piston/Cup should be greased with brake fluid before the latter is inserted into the former?
My current thinking is to order both the cheap £12 replacement and also the OEM Repair Kit, so I can fit the former while overhauling the original....

It’s easy.
Slacken the pipe union Undo both bolts on the slave Remove slave from gearbox and undo the pipe by spinning the slave round Spin new slave onto pipe Fit to gearbox Tighten bolts Tighten pipe union Bleed it up fresh brake fluid of your choosing
I wouldn’t bother with the rebuild kit. I’ve fitted the cheap aftermarket slaves to numerous MX5s and they’ve all been fine.

I did it on my back on the garage floor in the midst of winter...
It was quite awkward getting the mounting holes lined up with the hose attached, and awkward getting the hose attached with the cylinder mounted...
Took longer than it should, and I didn't swear once...
