For sale we have my depowered MK1 steering rack. I'm looking for £80.
This has been done using the 'Flyin Miata' method of stripping the rack, turning down the internal piston to stop any air being compressed when the PAS lines are capped off and then welding the spline on the pinion shaft up to remove play.
I have also fitted new boots and given the whole thing a clean a paint.
And the internals:
Pinion shaft welded
Piston turned down
Please note, the rack mounting brackets and bushes, along with the track rod ends will not be included in the sale.

Ooh, nice welding I wish I had those skills! Just to check, is this the rack you had some play in previously?

Ooh, nice welding I wish I had those skills! is it not a bit undercut? pictures of welds are never awfully clear to my eye :/

I confess that is not my welding. A nice old boy at work did it for me. Mine would not look like that!
And no, it's not the rack with the play. I bought this off of eBay from a breaker specifically to depower and then fit in place of the dodgy rack. It cured the symptoms, but is a trifle heavy for a daily road car - hence selling.

Ah, cool, thanks for the clarification! I have one similar ready to go on but I haven't seen the welding myself, so this is tempting... FWIW I already have a depowered rack but I'm just looking to eliminate even the slight play the non-welded (current) version has, because I find that makes it heavier! I don't find it heavy day-to-day, though, and I think backing off the castor can help reduce any steering effort required, if I understand things correctly! Ooh, nice welding I wish I had those skills! is it not a bit undercut? pictures of welds are never awfully clear to my eye :/ I am no expert! Just looks very regular and thorough

Just looks very regular and thorough when I was an apprentace, one of the lasting memories was being told that 'a good looking weld is not always a good weld'................ something I have quoted several times since (& maybe needed as an excuse ) Rich.

I feel like we are straying into denigrating poor fellow's rack with only one picture on which to base any judgement! I'm not even sure what 'undercut' is lol As I think I read on one of the rack depowering guides, it only ultimately has to deal with as much force as our skinny arms can put into the steering wheel, so I think that any even half-decent weld should be just fine!

In terms of the welding, I don't really know enough about it to comment with authority. But the guy who welded it has been doing it roughly the same amount of time that I have been alive, and having seen some of his other work (he welded another guy from work's TVR Chimaera chassis), I'm happy to let him work as he sees fit!
Also, in terms of safety factor, even if the worst should somehow happen and the weld break, all that would happen is a little slop in reintroduced to the rack. You wouldn't lose steering or anything dramatic like that.

I have heard that the effort needed to steer can be reduced by optimizing the steering geo, but I only really made up the depowered rack as a diagnostic exercise to see where my horrible steering feel came from. It succeeded at that, so I'm happy to try and find a PAS rack that works properly and go to that!

yeh, sorry. I never meant to denigrate anything and actually if you crash you kind of WANT your steering to break anyway I'm just a total noob at welding and enjoy trying to understand what's going on in visual inspection. I did used to work for an engineering firm and drive the van which was as close as I got to the non-destructive and destructive testing of the products the firm made.
