So my 1.6 turbo is leaking from the headgasket... I'm sure the car is wanting to die now and it hates me for not letting it.
Anyway, to keep things cheap I'll reuse and skim my head, new HG and other gaskets, new timing belt kit but basically churn it out as cheap as possible.
But is there any mods that will be worth doing while the head is off that are really good value for money? Obviously putting in some high lift cams is good for 10% extra hp but it's out of my price range. My lifters seem reasonably quiet at the mo so I'll leave those alone, but I've read that backing off the exhaust cam 1 tooth can help with power, and maybe having some adjustable pulleys could fine tune things but is there horses to be had?
I'll probably change the coolant hoses for silicone and if I can afford it do the coolant reroute, but is there any other things to be doing while its all off?

I think you've pretty much got it all covered!

re-seat the valves also, de-burr the headbolt holes Rich. Having been forced to get my HG done a couple of years ago because it went in a big way, definitely do as much as you can while it's apart. I wish I'd had the head stripped / cleaned up while it was apart as I now have a suspected burnt valve issue that might have not been an issue if I'd got it at least decarbonised... Definitely do full silicon hose set while it's apart, and if you can find the money for cams now, that would save time / labour in the future to fit/adjust/rolling road. Would a Big Valve conversion be an option / beneficial to do if you get the head re-built? Blink do a porting/polishing/flow measurement job that give benefits? Thermostat, all gaskets, plugs, leads, belts, alloy rad, hoses, intercooler?, oil cooler?, remove A/C?, depower the rack?, engine mount refresh?, exhaust hanger refresh?... All of these things cost money, though but I try to think of the labour I'm saving later... lol

Since the head will be off and access easier, do all the rear of engine maintenance you can such as heater hoses, temp sensor and the like
