I'm looking to buy a doomed '5 as a breaker as I covert a 6speed box and the later subframes etc. to fit on my Eunos is it pot-luck or specific models that should have the 6 gears? Thanks in advance. Rich.

Covet or convert?
Seriously, I have often thought of a six speed for my mk1, but what are the advantages? If any, I have a supercharged 1.6 v special.

You want a sport from 2000 - 2002. They had the 6 speed box and the TorSen LSD. The later 2.5s had a Super Fuji LSD that is not as strong.
Also some MK2s had this set up. The 10th anniversary for example.

Unless you are converting for power reasons (ie. you are blowing up 5 speeds), the 6 speed isn't as nice as the 5 - much more notchy, not as precise.

I must explain my motives better...... I'm interested in sprint & hillclimb competition, curiosity had me looking into gearboxes & ratios (I have a new Tran-x ford 'type 9' Straight-cut / close-ratio gearbox in my garage supposedly destined for my Chevette HS rallycar build (10+ years in the making, not much progress & too many ' other' projects....) and have discovered that quaife make a bellhousing to fit the Mazda engine to the ford gearbox pattern then looked into Mazda gearboxes & possibilities....... Covet or convert? Seriously, I have often thought of a six speed for my mk1, but what are the advantages? If any, I have a supercharged 1.6 v special. Both as to advantages? for a roadcar? if combined with the (3.6:1??) final-drive that Mazda specified, the 6speed gives similar 1-5 as the 5speed & 4.3:1 in a 1.6 mk1 '5 =with the added benefit of motorway driving in 6th gear having lower engine revs than using the origonal 5speed's top gear (if you understand my ramblings..........) when I drive my 1.6 Eunos its common for me to ignore 1st gear for spirited launches... suppose its a hark-back to rallying, also to stupidly driving said rallycars as daily-drives anyway, using 2nd gear (in the 5speed standard gearbox) - you can travel further before gearchange & if theres a corner around the 1-2 gearchange position you have to remove one hand from the steeringwheel / depress the clutch (loose drive) & stir the gearstick - all can loose time ESPECIALLY if in competition like a sprint or hillclimb ^^ the above is at the expense of clutch-slip (ok if you have a good clutch!!) You want a sport from 2000 - 2002. They had the 6 speed box and the TorSen LSD. The later 2.5s had a Super Fuji LSD that is not as strong. Also some MK2s had this set up. The 10th anniversary for example. the lsd (or diff itself) are of no real importance as I'm looking towards a plate-type from 3j. www.3jdriveline.com/lsd/the larger (post '93?) 7" crownwheel diff assembly & supporting parts like shafts etc. are required my cars early 6" crownwheel diff probably wont like some abuse and its probably needing a rebuild / bearings so work Unless you are converting for power reasons (ie. you are blowing up 5 speeds), the 6 speed isn't as nice as the 5 - much more notchy, not as precise. its the ratios I want, if a 6speed is used as a dogleg gearbox by ignoring the 1st gear, the ratios are nice & close compare the 5speeds ratios and the 6speeds (with 1st ignored) 5speed.. 1st 3.163 2nd 1.888 3rd 1.333 4th 1.000 5th .814 6speed (without 1st) 2nd 2.269 3rd 1.645 4th 1.257 5th 1.000 6th .843 if you compare race & rally gearbox ratios they are very similar to the 6speeds 2-6 so a lot cheaper than a quaife etc. added to the fun I'm looking for the illusive Kia Sportage front diff to 'borrow' its 4.7:1 ratio / Crownwheel&Pinion sorta anyway.... Rich.

I rarely use 1st when I want a quick start, changing gears wastes time....

Years ago, I had a Rover 216Gsi as a company car, it had the Honda engine, nobody could beat me off the lights, started in 2nd and hit the Rev limiter at 63mph in the same gear, great car!
