Hi,
i really would like to convert my 5 to electric powered,if you have or know of any info specifically on electric powered 5`s or indeed any other alternative fuel source powered ones, please do post up any thoughts, links and info here,no matter how daft they seem.
Personally i will be looking at the cheapest budget options due to shortage of funding but am interested in any info please.
Many many thanks in advance.

I have looked into this briefly, and indeed into how much it would likely cost to make a usable EV out of ANY of my vehicles. To cut a long story short EXPENSIVE. Really expensive. www.evmiata.com/estimates.html have some ideas for layout. It is the Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries which are the main stumbling block for most people. Without them you just don't have any sort of usable range. I figured I could probably convert one of our smaller FWD cars more easily but you are still looking at upwards of £6k for batteries alone and that isn't with a very generous capacity. Pisses me off. If gobernments were even half serious about cutting air pollution, they would be paying people to convert existing cars to EV with grants.

MCM did a video on it. While not the most scientific work in the world, was interesting:

If gobernments were even half serious about cutting air pollution, they would be paying people to convert existing cars to EV with grants. Although, of course, that just shifts the emissions from the vehicle to the coal-burning/gas-fired power station, unless you are charging at home off solar panels and an electricity tariff sourced from entirely sustainable sources... lol (And Nuclear being sustainable is still a point of discussion!)

True, also the strip mining of lithium and pollution of groundwater being a factor. Remove the fossil fuels from the electricity supply chain though and I don't doubt the air would start to become more breathable again.
The only people who are trying to debate the sustainability of nuclear are people who already have money in the industry or stand to make money from future deals. An industry which requires such huge subsidies from governments just to stay in business, and which shirks any responsibility for deadly waste management through capped costs is a zombie industry from a bygone age which should have died long ago. Useful for the people who want to proliferate nuclear weapons and destroy all life on the planet though, and so the 'discussion' goes on.

Cheers Corders and thanks for the MCM link Zoona, nice to see Moog with an EV Grin The answers are coming, but slowly and maybe not where you might expect them coming from. The way i see it,is we really do need to try and start living within our means, have a look at this inspiring video, the first few mins are a bit fast, with kids or maybe a computer type voice talking, but try to get past it and see what folks are up to, There are a lot of folks trying really hard, mainly unsupported off thier own backs,i am so proud of all of them for having a go. This is one of many great websites i have recently found, www.diyelectriccar.com/forums/There are loads of others from pushbikes to huge earth moving dumper trucks and even Nordic ferries all going EV powered. wigwambam,Lithium can be colected or mined from a number of sources from what i understand and it really doesn`t have to be lithium for everyone, there is plenty of older battery tech that would do for most commuter users and all sorts of totally new tech coming to the market very very soon, such as Graphene here, www.diyelectriccar.com/forums/showthread.php/sunvault-enters-production-graphene-battery-167706.htmlThere is all sorts of folks working in all areas to try and help sort out transport issues of the future,i think they should be aplauded and encouraged, not slated, belittled and dismissed as i have seen on most IC car forums and the like. Please do try to keep an open mind and positive Change is sure to happen, the future will not be stopped and the kids want thier fun driving time too,IMHO it is selfish and greedy for us to deny them the possibility by just ripping it all up now for ourselves,a compromise must be sought.

I don't tend to agree with many people at the moment but you seem to have the right idea! Nice forum find, I will do some reading when I have time. I would love to find a more affordable way of DIYing an EV.
The future should have happened ages ago at this point, just too much invested in dinosaur juice by the dinosaurs of finance coupled with blocking alternatives in various spheres of influence. I still have hope when I speak to the youngers but unfortunately some old codgers will be creating plumes of toxic smoke until enough people make the decision to end them. I am under no illusions, having been one of the bad people for so long. It'll be concrete socks and into the sea on judgement day for me, another long haul flight this weekend...I just hope it isn't too late to prevent sea levels rising to the point where they endanger the HUNDREDS of precariously placed coastal nuclear stations all over the world.

One thing that my dad said to me just before he passed away was "it`s never too late" i really hope he was right I don`t worry so much about nuclear power as i used to,we are all nuclear powered ,by the sun,it gave us all our lives and means to sustain life,we all know it is best to keep it well away in the far distance and using it on Earth is not a great idea, but it`s here and the sooner we can get it under control enough to limit it`s use or stop using it,the better,i think we all know that by now
