Just after a bit of advice.
I'm handy with a spanner but never opened an engine before.
I have a spare 1.8 na engine but it's been sat for 4 years in my garage, I bought it off a guy who pulled it from his mk1, apart from him saying it was ok I have no assurances it's ok.
Basically I initially wanted to just chuck a set of rods in my current one but I figured might as well do rods, bearings, rings and studs since I have the spare one sitting here.
As I don't know the state of the engine and without going too mental on a rebuild what should i do to the head to ensure it'll be alright?
I'll obvs be taking it to a machine shop, should I get them to do valves? I'll get it skimmed to ensure its all straight and level anyway?
I wanna build as much as I can, as I said it's a spare block, so worse case if I install it and I mess it up I will always have another sat there....
Any advice appreciated.

if you've a spare engine then just top&tail it to have a looksee? nothing ventured etc. also, have a budget.... if the cylinderhead is flat then don't bother with a skim as it allows later machining if needed. as to valves, once the head is off, remove the cams & followers (but leave sparkplugs in) then invert the head so it's chambers are at the top, place on a flat table. pour some petrol in each chamber & if the valve's seating is good there will be no liquid leakage into the inlet or exhaust ports although re-seating the valves is good practace & cheap so while the head is off...... when the sump is removed this gives a chance to inspect the crankshaft, plastiguage is your friend if you loosen bearing caps. how far you dig is dependant on your budget, how much are main / big-end & thrust bearings? what about piston-rings (or a re-bore & pistons?) do you get the cylinder-block acid dipped to remove the gack in the waterways? maybe re-surfacing the headgasket surface or line-boring the crankshaft's main-bearing tunnel? sorry, off on a tangent Rich.

Yeah that's my thing, I really want to do it simply but I know once it's apart I'll spiral out to a mega build..
Maybe I'll literally open it chuck some rods in then take the other engine and build something crazy.. At least then I'll have a working turbo car!

Did similar on my turbo build.
It's easy to let things get out of control, so set a budget!
I did: Rods Bearings (ACL Race) New piston rings (old oil control rings were completely gummed up) and bore honed
New valve stem seals and valve and seat cut All new seals and gaskets Bottom end clean Block decked and light skim on head
New water pump, belts etc.
I kept the stock oil pump to save cash, but a boundary engineering or MK2.5 pump was next on the list.
