Had a read as i'm in process of doing this swap at the mo.
I solved my problem with the column by changing to a MK2 intermediate shaft (The half of the column that goes from the rack to the UJ just past the bulkhead)
Some points:
You will need MK2 Subframe, Mk2 Rack, Mk2 Intermediate Shaft, Mk2 hubs.
If retaining the PAS, only the hose from the pump - rack fits okay with a little persuasion, the one from the bottom of the res to the rack i'm still trying to find a solution for.
I will update when i find one.

UPDATE:
Fitted all up using MK1 line from pump to rack, and a MK2 line from res to rack.
Pipes required a little massaging but so far it works okay and holds fluid fine.
Result.

Sorry to bring back a old post but what did you doabout the 2 bolts at the rear of the front subframe ? Mine don't line up on the nb subframe swap. I'm left stuck
All the bolts lined up perfectly for me. Perhaps there is a different version for a specific combo year?
I would offer to measure, but sadly the car that this swap was done on was lost to a building fire in 2019.
