i happened to see that Thruxton had a Test day for the BTCC cars today, so I went and had a look as it is free to get in.
What a good day out, you can walk around the paddock see the masses of equipment that BTCC teams truck round with them - watch them working on the cars and see them driving round from any vantage point you like. they weren't hanging about, saw a couple go off!
Bonus was the Ginettas and Formula 4 were also there.
Just cost me the fuel to get there on a nice sunny day!
Keep an eye on your local tracks - I suspect most have some type of free to spectate test days!

It sounds like a really good day for photography, being able to get up close and personal instead of being stuck in a seat somewhere.
