So it’s rounds 3+4 of the Classic Marques Speed Challenge this coming weekend at Wiscombe, near Sidmouth. I don’t expect to do well as it’s a very narrow track & am unable to take advantage of the amazing handling of the MX5. The only time to be had I recon is on the brakes into a couple of tight corners.
The best thing about it is a pint of Otter at the end of the day!
Here’s my go a few years ago in my Griffith-

That was a good fun weekend at Wiscombe. The track was extremely slippery for practice on Saturday morning which resulted in lots of people slipping off, luckily I survived but a few cars got dinged, this meant that 2 runs for all competitors took 41/2 hours... Thanks to Dave Newman giving me a little info(the track was drying), I was able to go 2.3sec quicker in T1 than practice which was good enough to get within 0.03 sec of my arch rivals time in his Lotus Super 7. T2 was a bit slower as I really struggled to get the power down through ‘Martini’ which is a steep, extremely cambered hairpin bend- I either bogged down or had massive wheelspin & never got it right all weekend. I twiddled with the suspension which made the car really drifty through the Esses which was pretty scary as there’s lots of big immobile objects to hit; back to plan A then- sacrifice the hairpin speed to enable me to make time through the esses. I managed to bag the 1st place trophy for the class. Sunday didn’t start too well as I got a bit carried away in P1 & had a 1/2 spin at Sawbench- the track wasn’t as grippy as Saturday afternoon & I just couldn’t get the opposite lock on quick enough; I was sliding towards a big tree but luckily stopped short, put the car into 1st & got back on track + carried on to the finish. P2 was quicker as I kept it on the blackstuff but I wasn’t really on it as my mate in his Cosworth powered Ginetta had a massive off but amazingly didn’t crunch anything. Normal service resumed for T1, a slight lift over ‘bunnies leap’, playing the SC torque through the esses, redline up the straight & doing the best I can to brake late for Martinin to carry speed thru- 0.10sec quicker than my Saturday effort. T2 was slower as I was just trying too hard. One thing through the weekend was I think I managed to nail the starts- my traditional weak point- was only 0.04 slower than my Ginetta driving friend. Managed to swipe the 1st place trophy again....

Well done, I also struggle with the corners there, great venue, track changes greatly through a weekend, drifty is where I tend to be , Daves run was pretty sweet, he's got that so well dialled in, so much grip looking at the vid, new version of extremes clearly working well for him, nipped in under 46s Bunnies leap is flat for my Mazda, wet or dry, its just not quick enough, I won't lie, it's still butt clenching time helps if I close my eyes
