To add confusion, you can now get proper penetrating oil and several other sprays with the "WD-40" brand name, but the original WD-40 product disperses water and isn't penetrating oil.

Maybe not, but generations of mechanics will say it works.... not saying that other stuff isnβt better ....

A good alternative to Plusgas is the 3 in One penetrant spray, just as effective, if not more so, and easy to get over the counter at Halfords.

At least the job will be done and you can move forward. This is one of the few things on a 5 which are difficult to do.
Out of interest, has anyone coated the new bolts in copper slip (or other greasy stuff) to prevent the problem reoccurring?

Out of interest, has anyone coated the new bolts in copper slip (or other greasy stuff) to prevent the problem reoccurring? when I swapped the dampers on my car last year. copperslip was used on re assembly luckily for me the hub-bolts eventually came out after some persuasion but were tight & needed help..... what got me was the camber-bolts as I had to remove the wishbones due to the rear damper lower bolts 'captive' nuts being, well, un-captive.... anyway, I'm fitting refurbed mk2 rear hubs (& shafts / diff etc.) soon so hopefully the copperslip has stayed soft & not dried to a glue Rich. @ chris71, I've got a pair of rear hubs/driveshafts/wishbones spare (but they are still togther as a unit) if you are stuck, located near Swansea though....
