My mk2 blew up on track, my widearch mk1 turbo was an absolute pup, and now, finally the stars have misaligned leaving me without the cash to buy the car of my dreams, but a very good example of a mk1 in the meantime.
I know the car very well before buying it too. It's the car that donated its engine to mine when it got it's own new engine and turbo conversion that me and the owner fitted. The car that was regularly MOTd and serviced by the first owner, at the garage that I was the manager of, making me owner number 3. It's rust free, treated very well, owned 26 of its 28 years by pensioner who garaged it nightly, and then modified in a no-expense-spared mentality by the last guy.

It's obviously come with a load of faults, every car I've ever owned has, and this is no exception. The power steering has fully leaked out, engine oil is leaking too, slow puncture nsf, stereo failed, and whilst rust free, generally scruffy.
But massive plans are afoot. Ive had so many ideas on what I would do to one of these cars given half the chance, but never thouht that the last car I owned was worth the effort as I knew the rot was settled in to stay. With a new car I'm inspired to carry out all of my crazy ideas and try and do something a bit different to the rest of yous all. It will be my last hurrah in 5's though, with the intention that this will build up to a car of higher value than the average 5 build and constant saving behind the scenes, the dream car comes next. So if I'm going to do anything to a 5, this is my chance!
Ive had it about a month now and I've done loads, so I'll do some update posts quick. More for my records than yours, I doubt anyone bar me even reads project threads - they are all the same, right?

One of the biggest projects ive always fancied doing was a custom dash. Obviously, Project Ronin is both the inspiration and the masterclass on this subject and I've studied the pics and write-ups a lot, but I'm putting my own spin on things: ] ] ] ] ] So the top vents are removed, the brace bar is removed, the top half of the heater has also been lost for access but I can still switch between screen and feet, and the headunit Is in. It's an Xtrons android setup with a 10.1 screen, runs Bluetooth phone and music, wifi, apps, screen mirror, etc. I've also bought the upgraded microphone for the phone and the DAB adaptor for digital radio. It tethers to my phone and gives me google maps and nav too. nice.

A couple of other jobs that have been done... The car came with a DaveFab rear jacking bar. I'd have loved to have kept it on but needs outweight wants on this case and the towbar off the last car is fitted to this one. I've already towed with it and it works flawlessly. Ive also fitted a Rightclick remote central locking kit, Learning form last time to get the 3 button not the 2 button and then I can also have the boot release on the handset. This car doesn't have an interior release for the boot so I added the one from the boot popper kit to the blank in the dash and then wired the remote receiver to the popper in a way that the remote works all the time but the popper only works with the IGN on, so people cant get in with a stick through the window. Pics of the boot only, theres nothing to see on a door kit, other than I managed to get the wires inside the factory door boots so it's proper clean.

No concerns about chassis stiffness after cutting the brace bar out from behind the dash?

No concerns regarding the brace, I have pushed the car since and not noticed any real difference. I can always weld it back in in a lower position, I kept the down pieces a little longer when I cut them to be able to brace them afterwards if needed.
Been slow on the updates as Ive been working on my bike project and also putting a patio in the garden, but got a nice job done at the weekend, moving the hazard switch block to the other side of the wheel. I don't want anything on the dash except the screen if I can.
I cut the crackets out of the dash that held in the 3 switches, made a piece of carbon to full the hole and mounted all the switches into it. it's not 100% perfect but it does what It needs to do - get all this concept working before I move onto the cosmetics. Also, rotating the buttons on the switch so the logos are the right way up is a much bigger job than you'd expect - that was about an hour on its own!
Just need a plan now for the window switches and then I can lose the centre console.

It's been ages since ive updated this, ive done a bunch of maintenance stuff and a bit of tidying, but mostly been doing things outside of the car world sadly.
Couple of updates though,
First got myself a set of cheap Jeep headlights. Dissapointed they don't have the sidelights built in but I'm not going to be changing them again and the low and high beams are a big improvement over the originals so all happy.
]
Also, started the last job on the removal of the centre console, which is to move the window switch. It would have been a lot easier to put the switches on the dash, but like a muppet I have to take things too far. It's literally takewn hours to get these switches in to the door handle, and I still have the other side to do before I even start on the wiring.
]
Still, its all fun, aint it!
