I've watched that more than a couple of times, sounds great, does it burble/pop quite a lot on the overrun? Couldn't quite tell with the wind noise. I may have made some minor alterations to the overrun timing š haha. Yeah it pops and burbles when the exhaust gets nice and hot, it does it quite a lot, but it doesn't ST bang because I'm not a total bellend š

Basically I've just retarded the timing in the overrun fields of the spark table, that's pretty much it. As there's no load at all on the engine you can retard it a fair bit, though I won't be doing it any more than it is as it's got enough burbles and pops for me without being nasty.

What makes my brain hurt is that I am sure I read 'modern cars' aren't putting any fuel in on the overrun (if not mapped for 'popbang' effects ), yet they still sound like they are combusting fuel (in terms of exhaust noise) rather than being silent?? There's some chav round here that has mapped whatever it is they are driving to sound like a shotgun going off, Del Boy Capri-style Not at all annoying... lol. (That said, I've not heard it for a while so perhaps the fuzz have had a word!)

(That said, I've not heard it for a while so perhaps the fuzz have had a word!) Very true, in fact even the standard MX-5 ECU has a total fuel cut off on overrun over a certain RPM. It's been used for many years for better fuel consumption. It essentially goes full lean off throttle, but as there is no load on the engine it won't ever cause any issues. I don't currently have Decel Fuel Cutoff switched on, but I'll be sorting it out soon. The lean condition in the engine actually seems to promote pops and bangs more. I pulled a little fuel out of my overrun fields manually and it actually increases the burbles and pops.

I thought I'd try a 0-60 test this evening with launch control.
Not a terrible attempt, bit of wheel spin and short shifted first a little, and 6,500rpm limiter still in place as seen in 2nd as I'm testing out the Rolling hard cut limiter and didn't want it to creep or blow past the OE rev limit and over rev the engine. Good news is that the Rolling limiter appears to be controlling it nicely with no creep above the set limit.
Also been messing with Acceleration Enrichment settings on hard throttle inputs and it seems a lot better now, removing stutter between gears that was present on the basemap.
Hope you enjoyed the cheap Ebay LEDs flickering away š slightly annoying and need to get that sorted!
Around 9 seconds, considering the above I don't think that's too bad a benchmark.

Been putting off fitting a metal plate into the dash and sorting my various switches for Launch Control, wideband, and secondary fan.
Made some minor map tweaks and still chasing a few issues, but just been enjoying it when I can.
Got some footage with my dash cam with an engine bay mic:
The mic really didn't like part throttle. I used Reaper music software I have and tried to EQ the harsh frequencies out, but that's the best I could do.
When I say "engine bay mic", what I actually mean is I cable tied my old Huawei phone into the engine bay, and synced the audio between the camera and phone mic by making a loud bang on the dash lol. It'll do for now.
Not exactly fast, but it's great fun. Exhaust hanger came loose 6 seconds from the end which then caused the other 2 backbox hangers to slip off their rubbers and you can just about hear the backbox hit the tarmac haha. 10 minutes in a layby and that was sorted.

Hi, been a while. Lockdown world means I'm still slogging away working from home, but been out seeing people again, so that's been nice. Still not been to a pub for 5 months though Been doing a few bits to the car, but mainly just driving it. I made up a switch panel to run a few bits on: It's not wired in yet, but soon I'll have it wired up for second fan, Wideband, and Launch Control (the Top Gun style one for that obviously!). Got new rear tyres and fitment is even tighter despite being the same size. It was a little too close and was rubbing a bit, but when it was warm the overfenders were expanding enough that it wasn't haha. I adjust the overfenders slightly and it's all good now. I finally fitted my passenger seat and seatbelt, and while I was at it I pulled the seatbelt tower cover off and had a look inside the passenger side sill: Honestly not bad at all. Some rust in there but it's far better than I thought it would be. The outsides look a little rusty up the sides, but really it's not all that bad. So I bought some sill inner and outer panels, then realised they don't go quite high enough, and ended up getting these as well: A mate is coming over this weekend and doing them for me. He's a great welder and doing it for really good mate's rates price, so they'll be fresh soon! I will then be prepping the car for paint. My other mate paints his grass oval race cars, so he has a fair bit of experience. He painted another friend's AE86 recently for a great price, and it came out really well, so I'll be going the same colour, as I've always wanted to do this cream, and it's a lovely cream. Just need to get a rear bumper as my exhaust cut out has been melted away quite badly over the years, and 2 new front wings, then sand sand sand. Fitted 2 new inner tie rods as the old ones were just so dead. So loose, and the right side had in and out play, it was horrendous, you could wobble the wheel slightly like with a dodgy wheel bearing. All sorted now. Car also passed it's MOT, which was nice. ITBs are running nicely now, been tweaking a few bits, and it's all going well. Plans for more engine bits further down the line, but bodywork first. My gearbox has been very whiney from when I got it, and it's only getting worse. I've been meaning to change the oil, but I just can't be bothered haha. The plan is to get a new box, and do a new clutch and lightweight flywheel at the same time. Well today was the day for the gearbox. A guy on FB Marketplace put one up, never fitted, he bought it 3 years ago from an Owner's Club member and it just sat in his shed. The guy he bought it from said it was sweet, but he couldn't be sure. So he put it up for... Ā£1. Yep, there it is. Ā£1 gearbox. Lovely. He seemed a nice guy, had a good chat to him, he had a really clean UK spec Mariner Blue mk1 that had been resprayed, sat on OE BBS wheels. Entirely standard, and so so clean, lovely car! Here's the AE86 I mentioned earlier: Paint is really nice considering how little he charged, and I'm already pencilled in for the same once I have the welding and new panels sorted. It's going to be good. Another good mate also got a Corolla, but of the KE70 variety: All I can say is, both of these cars are insane. Both 20v 4AGE conversions, so throttle bodies for both. The KE70 has other bits done to the engine and has an 8,700rpm rev limit. The sound is just, well you just have to hear it in person. Absolute screamers, it's incredible. Also he got a new puppy called Rolo, and he's just the most adorable little thing I've ever seen in my life

Great post on many levels! Puppy is very cute - I hope he settles in quickly! Will be interested to see how the respray and welding goes. Are you going to de-rust treatment the insides when it's all apart? Kudos for getting stuck in and attempting the box/clutch - I hate working under a car, my worst-case-scenario planning scares me haha

Looks like some good progress you've managed, tempted to raise the rev limiter on the 5 now? Is the switch for the wideband just connected into the 12V? and the launch control the clutch switch? Similar to what I'm trying to do, but I can see the benefit of including the above. How's your mapping going? I'm getting pretty close to fitting my speeduino now.

I'm just about to post about the rust work, it was truly horrendous hahaha. Yeah, we might pull the entire engine out to do it, and then paint the bay while we're at it.

Haha it's set to OEM limit now, won't be going any higher as there's no power there with stock cams. Going to buy another head, get it skimmed, put cams in and fresh valve stem seals, maybe some stronger valve springs (need to look up this bit), and then I might consider raising it afterwards. For now there's no power up there so I doubt I'll move it. Yeah that's correct for both the switches, though I still haven't got round to wiring them in yet! Yeah it's going well, car hasn't been driven much the last couple of weeks as rear tyre is on cord on inner edge (bad toe) and been having welding done. It hates to start for the first time after being sat for a week or so, I need to start it more often to keep it happy haha.
