I've been running aftermarket speakers with my Sony head-unit for the past year, I'd like to get some better quality sound out of my setup, especially when it's at higher volumes (top down), I'd love a bit more bass to hide the rattles also. Sadly I've lost my headrest speakers now I've fitted bucket seats.
Been considering an under seat sub behind the passenger seat (not enough space) or in the spare wheel section in the boot, possibly some components and an amp of some variety.
Curious to see what others have done/plan to do.

I managed to fit a slimline amp/sub thing behind my stock passenger seat and it sounds pretty decent. If your buckets allow it, that will work

How do you guys hear anything in a mk1? I could have a Glastonbury size PA system in mine and still only hear the exhaust, plus rattles, clunks, whirrs and bangs🤣

With the roof down, I found that a MK2 wind locker with speakers made a good difference. If you can't fit one, potentially try getting something into the parcel shelf so something is nearer to your ears
As for bass, only real option is slimline sub somewhere. People even put them in the passenger footwell. Or try a slim one built into the spare wheel

There was, might still be there, a couple bass speaker installed in rear mk1 seat cushions, looked like OEM. I have heard that the more extensive sound Miatas had these in the States. If you are wanting more volume (and some quality) go for a small amp it will be better than using the amp in the unit. A little door padding behind the speakers in the doors will help, silent coat works good, 2 mm thickeness is enough
oups missed out that I saw them on eba*

Very good system if your car has the connectors in place already or just run some wires under the seats. They call them bass shakers, basically a speaker without a cone When I fitted my MK2 wind locker speakers I spliced off the extra wiring in my under seat connector to run it under the carpet and up to the parcel shelf

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'm looking into a slimline sub for behind the passenger seat, I think there will be enough space. Going for an active one with a built in amp and can add an amp at a later date.

I'm looking into a slimline sub for behind the passenger seat, I think there will be enough space theres the 'dead' space behind the seats / next to the fuel tank, can remove / unbolt the metal panel & fit speakers into it also uses the boot area as an enclosure? should get 6" cones in there (1 each side?) Rich.

Thanks guys, they cost quite a lot and I'd need to cut it up for the roll bar. Looking at the space the spare wheel would sit, seems a prime spot maybe? I have gaps for the roll bar so it wouldn't be sealed in the boot?
