As the price of NCs drops further and further, I'm wondering what options there are for cheap engine swaps or replacements?
There are obviously a few issues with the NC engines, so assuming someone was to buy a cheap NC with a blown engine (probably 1.8 base car) ... what are the options?
You can obviously get a replacement ... they're not cheap, but they would slot straight in with no issues. And they may well blow up again!
1.8s seem weaker and 2.0s a bit better ... so can a 2.0 be put straight in where a 1.8 was before, and is there any point?
I understand the 2.3 out of the Mazda 6 is an easy swap option ... but does anyone know what's actually involved to get it running? Power isn't much different, but as I seem to be able to find 2.3 engines cheaper than decent MX5 1.8 or 2.0 engines, it might be worth a go if there aren't too many other changes needed
Next up would be a 2.5l swap ... slightly more involved?
What about MPS, or Focus ST swaps? Lots more power, but has anyone done it .. and any links to build threads etc?
Just generally interested in any info, links to discussions or build threads ... I'm only interested in cheap, DIY info though ... I'm aware I can pay various people to do a swap for me, or slot a V8 in ... but that would take away the point of it being a cheap car

1.8, 2.0, 2.3 and 2.5 bottom ends all bolt straight up to the head on the NC. As far as I know even everything else bolts up in the same places. I think the 2.3 and 2.5 are just a bit taller.
2.3 and 2.5s with a manifold and a map make S2000 chasing amounts of power.

Hmmm, well thanks for the suggestions ... 2.3 swap looks the easiest / cheapest. Not sure how well the £20k engine fits my definition of cheap ... 🤣

Probably cheaper just to buy a very nice early NC1 2.0Lt Sport and enjoy it straight away.

That’s what I did, great car, but just couldn’t get comfortable in it, so I’m back in a mk1.
