Getting ready to change water pump due to a strange noise so will obviously do the timing belt at the same time.
Questions are: 1: Does anyone have a list of all the stuff I need, preferably in a table of some sort, parts only. I live in far north of Scotland so a single postage hit is helpful. 2: Should I just go for one MX5 Parts all in one kits? 3: OEM parts only or are the pattern part acceptable?
Cheers

Kits are nice, oem pump seems like its best when comparing, sealant is better than gasket on the pump imho, gates belts are nice.
Oh, and a new gasket for the valve cover and possibly cam seals if they leak.
If you own a 3d printer you can print cam locking tools, but you can do it with wrenches.

I had this webpage guide saved, which may or may not be of any use! www.miata.net/garage/water_pump.htmlI think there's a guide in there for a water pump O-ring replacement as well, but I don't know if you'll need that?? You'll need to be careful ordering the auxiliary belt - there are different lengths, depending on whether you've got air conditioning or not. I would go OEM for the water pump but I don't think the belts etc. matter so much if budget is tight. You might need to replace the idler pulley and the cam belt tensioner pulley/spring if they are not moving smoothly. I found this cam locking tool to be pretty useful: www.mx5parts.co.uk/camshaft-locking-tool-mk1-25-p-3348.html

how much are you sponsored? I buy from autolink but they re not always the cheapest....... a waterpump 'usually' comes with associated seals & gaskets, I've been buying (& using) pumps from ebay. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NIPPARTS-KIA-MAZDA-WATER-PUMP-J1513011-L-NEW-OE-REPLACEMENT/373088305188NIPPARTS brand for £9.95 posted I've noticed that if you 'watch' this item / pump the seller will make a cheaper offer in a day or so & I had one for a few quid less (posted aswell) cambelts are available for ~ £6, tensioners & idlers are ~ £10+, oilseals are a very good idea as is a new 'crank-bolt & key' if you have a non 'shortnose' engine (can replace belt on early shortnose 1.6 engines without removing the cambelt pulley boss) I'm probably the only person on these forums that dislikes silly-con hoses for coolant (have a set of rad hoses from a 1.6 mk1 and everything else from a 1.8 mk1 available) - same with huge alloy radiators & coolant 'reroutes' BUT thats another story - battle-bowler on, awaiting flack................ Rich.

I was trawling several during my parts searches: MX5Parts Autolink MX5Heaven Suffolk Mazda MX5City Bofi Racing MX5 Restorer MX5 Bitz steelcitymx5 (on eBay)

Thanks for the responses guys, I’ll probably go for a kit.
Took things apart yesterday and the play in the water pump was bad, real bad. Would explain the strange noise I was getting.

I went for the MX5 Parts all in one package but added the front crank seal plus the two cam seals. On top of that I have stripped out the intercooler to see what kind of state it was in and this resulted in buying a 45 degree elbow and two straight connectors with beaded ends plus 3 silicon connectors. Also going to replace all the rusted “jubilee”, Mikalor clamps. Probably going for 316 SS jubilees all round.

Cool - 1.6 shortnose is the one it's said to be impossible to refit the crank keyway thing to securely once it's taken apart, meaning crank wobble and death! I know Zed.. disagrees but he has years of fiddling experience and a workshop full of kit to use if necessary!

I'd disagree too. Mine was off to replace the front crank seal and it is fine. No wear when it came off and the mechanic knew about the issue. I seem to recall him mentioning the original torque setting in the manual was wrong.
I think it's over exaggerated generally.
