Hi All, Hope you're all doing well.
Anyway, have a question. I bought a boot lid with the OEM luggage rack bolted/screwed to it. One of the corners has the chrome peeling so I took all the bits off. One of the captive nuts came loose and actually came out with the bolt. So I need to replace them ... the rivnuts I mean.
The only place I have found that sells them with the right drilling hole diameter is McMaster in the USA. I need aluminium or steel M5 thread rivnuts that go into a 7.5mm hole (19/64"). All the places that carry these have the M5 in 7mm holes. I find that that would to much play as the flanges are not that wide.
Any clue as to where I can get some?
Cheers

Zed. and dadbif have probably got something that would be useful in their sheds lol I am jealous of the man-caves with a huge selection of tools!

I'm sure m5 rivnuts swell more than .5mm or, if you're worried then (access permitting?) fit a washer? Rich.

I have both Top hat and thin sheet rivnuts, just pulled a couple up, they expand from 7mm to 8.5 (just, it doesn’t collapse perfectly round) I would do as Rich suggests, put a thin washer over the underside of rivnut. The top hat type have a flange, the thin sheet are designed to fit almost flush to the metal surface and have no flange, so would drop through your hole. I don’t recommend using aluminium, it is very easy to over clinch and pull the thread out.
OD of the flange is 10 mm

hey thanks for the info. more worried that the centering in the hole would be off. but I guess I could use the drill bit to center a washer, sort of stick it on then install the rivnut etc.

It is bound to move around as you crimp it up, important thing is both the outer flange and the washer are bigger than the hole. Make sure the washer inner diameter is the same as the rivnut outer diameter, 7mm

As you correctly assumed, the size of the hole is critical, especially when you have lateral force applied as you have with a loaded luggage rack. There is a risk of movement that will enlarge/distort the hole, resulting in a pull through. Have you thought of opening up the holes to take 6mm fasteners? 5mm sounds a bit flimsy. interesting document for sure. I had wondered about going to M6 directly and I think Ill get a couple of countersunk bolts to try. for the flat pieces (strips) it would not be an issue but the corner pieces have a some depth. The threaded part is not a problem but I don't want the head to stick out (euh that doesn't sound right ) Going M6 would raise the mechanical resistance by a third but the end plastic bits, that the straps go to, will be the weack point.
