Hello all!
I'm Dan, and I live just outside Northwich in Cheshire. I'm new to the MX5 scene, as recently I bought a 1.8 NA Merlot with rusty rear arches (whoops!) so once they are sorted, I'm looking to mod the car with the usual excitements (hopefully coilovers, polybushing, LSD etc) and maybe change the seats and suchlike. Hoping to meet a load of you out there once we can do so, I've never driven on a trackday and interested in a quick car to drive on the road, something a bit less sloppy but not hyper aggressive or hard.

there'll be more hiding  have a good dig before starting work to save unwanted suprises  also, beware of how quickly your bank will empty! aparently the 5 is a 'Cheap' car  Rich. |

there'll be more hiding have a good dig before starting work to save unwanted suprises also, beware of how quickly your bank will empty! aparently the 5 is a 'Cheap' car Rich. it depends how you look at it, mine barely cost me a penny for about 4 years.... it just turned out all of the things I should have been doing were needed in the next two. danmarr14 he's right about the rust I'm afraid, make sure you get it done properly, I didn't the first time round and ended up paying twice and it would have been less work/cost if I had it done proper before. Also get a proper alignment done, these cars are set up a little understeery from factory. Not sure if poly bushes are always the answer but I'm sure that conversation has been done to death before, doing the entire lot is pricey and rubber is probably about right for a road car in most places but if your going to do one area I'd consider the diff. |

Tell me about it Zed.., bought for only 850 quid but then cost me 500 quid to get it through the MOT (1 tyre went bang, handbrake dead, rear brake lines ballsed and replaced the discs/pads) - gulp! Still love it though. They were repaired in 2016 so I have been *FULLY* warned just how much it may cost to get it done, will look to do it in the spring so I can save some more to also get the underside sealed properly. Good news is the sills are fine, the front wings have patches of rust where the bumper meets the bottom of the wings but hopefully a bit cheaper to do. I was looking at getting it aligned and some good tyres on it (there's a set of OLD Toyo Proxes on it with the V shaped tread pattern...). Thanks for the advise re: polybushes, I would defo get the diff done but more likely if/when I get a better LSD into it, the open diff in mine is a bit crap. |

Welcome aboard!  A Merlot for only £850 isn't a bad start at all, be interesting to see some photos - it is indeed a slippery slope this MX-5 owning/modding malarkey however |

Zed.. don't I know it! I love it but this is a slippery slope this game... suggs84 thank you! I will take some in due course. My friend has had more than a few MX5s so he persuaded me in the end and by god it is fun - trouble is everytime I get into it the more I keep thinking, "it would be nice if it had this/that or I did this/the other" gulp

Yep already been seeing that!
"ooh these discs/pads are a good deal", "ooh this and that too!" and then at 1am I'm 4 pages deep into Demon Tweeks with lists of Rims, Diffs, Braided Brake Lines etc haha - far too tempting!
