There are some plans going forward, a mix of definetely and some of them a maybe, I don't really want to throw a tonne of money at the car as I wasted so much cash on a previous track car over the course of 8 years and just made it amazing on track and semi horrible on the road so I've learnt a lot from that. I certainly don't want to ruin this car, just maintain, preserve, improve rinse repeat. If I had more space at home there would be a second one to ruin/track though .
PROJECT PLANS
#4AGE 20V Silvertop 4-Throttle (ITB's)
Been in my brain for many years from watching repeats of Best Motoring and Initial D, I'm not looking to build a mega spec car just looking to flesh out the fun old car vibe. Of course I'm hoping to make a touch more power but snappy throttle, response and all the right honk noises is what I'm looking for. The supporting parts for the moment will be an ECU (preferably Link G4X), wideband, iat and associated wiring. Aim is to get things running smoothly with just the intake swap and on a standone ECU before adding anymore engine changes (ie. Cams). (Done 26/01/2023))
#Fit Tein Flex Z Coilovers -
See below posts, these are now on the car and great. (Done 18/10/2020)
#Full Geo Alignment (Camber, Caster and Toe) -
(Done 12/11/2020) - (Re-done by Tyre Pros Luton - Supermiata Race alignment 24/02/2023)
#New front wings both side. - Ended up doing a full front repaint! (Done 27/01/2022)
#Underbody Rust Prevention/Treatment -
Get rid of any signs of rust. (Done 01/06/2021)
#Uprated Pads/1.8 Carriers & Disks/Brake Ducts -
Prior to the lines and new fluid the brakes would get hot quick, will see if all this is needed but maybe just some better pads next time round starting with Roddisons pads working upto Carbotech if needed. (Roddisons pads done 13/06/2021)
#Recaro Profi SPG Seats -
These fit nicely and sans a set of RX7 recaros its about as close to OEM RS look I'll get (not that OEM is king or anything I just like how the RS interior looks). Although the stock seats have been de-foamed, I still find I'm a little close and high up with my frame, and therefore the Skye trip left me wanting a bit more comfort. People think fixed buckets are bad for long drives but they possibly just haven't found the right set for them. Previous experience of doing a trip to Europe and back in a set of Recaro poles with not a single pain has me sold on maybe getting a set similar to these. My last car had Sparco Evos which were great, but the Recaros were much more comfortable. (Drivers side done 07/06/2021)
#Tuckin99 Super Down Seat Rail
- I'm not the only who drives this car so they need to slide for sure. (Done 07/06/2021)
#Rear Lip -
Just to finish of the rear really, but only if they fit with the mud guards. I'd probably have to get the stupid fog light changed out and the hole in the bumper filled in though (why do importers do this?!) (Done 12/07/2021)
#Takata Race4 ASM Harnesses -
If I get the SPG's then its these and a roll bar, the ones in the Exige were the Schroth Profi II-FE ASM's and were great and very secure so would be happy with those too but I just prefer the look of the Takata's, besides Schroth was aquired by Takata and I'm pretty sure the Takata Race-4 ASM's are the same thing as the European ones are made to a different standard than the Japanese MPH341's so its a win win. (Drivers side done 01/08/2021)
#Roll/Harness Bar -
Decided to go with a GC Fabrications GC3 Roll Bar. (Done 01/08/2021)
#Second set of wheels - (Done - Work Equip 03 15/10/2021)
#Manifold/Exhaust -
2nd hand Racing beat 4-1 (May revist the idea of maxim works/fujitsubo super-ex manifold but this will do for now). (Done 05/03/2022)
#Radiator Cooling Panel -
Beatrush, Carbing or Cusco probably, a cheapish easy cooling/bling mod. Not sure how much difference they make but some people suggest they are worthwhile. RHD had the Laile Beatrush Panel on offer so can tick this one off. (Done 29/03/2022)
#Gearbox Oil Weep -
Pretty sure this needs to come off, clean out the bell housing, check all the seals and put it back, probably have to put another clutch on maybe if I'm faffing in that area even though this one is pretty new...? After a steam clean I might have a weep from one of the seals, I've aquired parts to replace all these and will probably do this at the end of this season. Done 01/06/2024Reminder to put a new cursed water plug in part FEA7-13-104
#Suspension component refresh -
Mainly to clear off the surface rust and protect them could just de-rust, strip wishbones and get them powdercoated or just do them with stone chip. Ball joints looked okay when we did the dampers but this is something I'm considering at the end of the year, I really want to use the car again for a full year but I know this needs doing. Space for me is the issue, hopefully a house move will help me accommodate this but still weighing up the options. Will probably do superpro bushings in all the arms, but depending on space as said, I'd want to strip and paint the arms and subframes... or replace them if needed (destroyordie??) Done 17/02/2022
#Hardtop -
Always planned to get one but not sure how much it would get used, love the look but don't actually drive the car in winter much, on the other hand they aren't getting any cheaper so if I have the space it might be worth hanging onto one. Done 19/08/2022
2017 to 2020, Story Time...
I didn't really have a name for this car/project, Skuzzle gave it the nickname "Kabal" from Mortal Kombat due to the reg K BWL (or the state of the paintwork lol) when I visited before they closed however, the cars face is a little more soft natured than a member of the so called Black Dragon crime syndicate who's fatality move was literally scaring his opponents to death with his face! . Maybe I'll call it the black dragon, but think less Game of Thrones and more like Spyro on the PS2....
... Anyway, I've owned the car since 2014, it was imported in 2003 and I'm the third owner, the first of those being the importer.
(Please let me know if the pictures don't load as flickr was giving me grief earlier, there is an absolutely sh**tonne of them so pipe up if you see nothing but waffling text)

So really, lets be honest, I've not been very active, simply a case of just enjoying the car and not spending much on it and whether I kept it was a question I had. However, as time has passed I've certainly grown attached and I can't see me wanting to let this car go so probably should keep a little more active in the community as these things are not getting any younger and its good to know people who have probably been through the pain you will go through at some point. I've had to make a few changes and keep a bit more on top of this thing in the past few years, the plans for this car were as follows from my original joining up hello back in October 2017...
Plans/Fixes are:
#Decent Alignment, nothing really wrong with how it feels currently (neutral) but after getting new tyres all round its something I want to get right for how want the car to feel.
#Either a new clutch or some adjustment is required as the bite point is mega high and noticed some slip between 2nd and 3rd.
#Nardi Deep Corn 330 or 350mm to replace standard 370mm Nardi, can't decide which size but need something closer.
#R-Package Style front lip
#Maybe a header or cat back, Fujitsubo Power Getter or HKS silent Hi-Power is the kinda of volume I'd be looking for but probably well out of luck getting hold of one.
#BBS's need a refurb, typical nasty hallmarks of water between the lacquer and the diamond cut surface. I'll get these powder coated most likely.
#Paint correction, if I can ever be rear canoed this car is never going to be a show queen, its got patina.
So of those plans, where are we now?
#R-Package Style front lip - No chance in sourcing an original one of these nowadays so picked up an abs plastic aftermarket one that has a reasonably good fit to give the front end a more finished look.
#Exhaust - Although my intention was to get an HKS/Corns or fujitsubo, I decided to go with an MX5Parts single exit in the interim as it needed doing, it sounds good enough for now.
I imported an HKS Silent Power for the Subaru a couple of years back and its perfect, really nice piece so may revisit this or look into getting a Corns. The finish on the HKS is mega though...
HKS サイレントハイパワー by batousan, on Flickr
#Clutch - It had done nearly 200,000kms so back in 2018 I picked up an Exedy OEM replacement, after it was given the once over by the chief parts inspector aka Luna the Cat, I had it fitted by Skuzzle Motorsport not long before they closed up shop...
... there was a car in there that caught my eye after watching lots of Best Motoring Touge 200 videos many years back, part of me was hoping I could just drop mine off and take this one away instead but alas I was informed the owner would not be pleased, given that he's on here I hope its still in good shape...
RS-AIZAWA panda on ITBs by batousan, on Flickr
So out with the old clutch, not in bad shape but was starting to slip in 2nd and 3rd and my next trip warranted a new one for sure.
As it turns out, although the clutch has not had a single issue after being fitted in terms of driveability, there has been oil around the bell housing and under the gearbox ever since along with and a high pitched noise that goes away when you touch the clutch pedal. Its a shame really, I'm not saying a bad job was done but something is certainly amiss in there. Of course when I had it done I asked them to check the rear main seal and it looked fine (and if it is, as you know, you leave it!) so I'm going to get the gearbox back off at somepoint and have a look at it myself over the winter and see if we can solve that now theres more time. As well as the clutch a new Cam Angle Sensor O ring, Cam cover gasket & Clutch Spigot bearing went in.
After that I spent 3,000kms+ driving around Scotland upto and around the Isle of Skye in Scotland, that was absolutely mega.

Luckily the other half drives this too so I got to enjoy a few stops along the way.

So yeah, that was a proper trip. The open empty roads up there were amazing, and that car delivered a lot of cheap laughs.
#Nardi Deep Corn - Managed to pick up a pristine 350mm Deep Corn in Wood for a reasonable price, having had suede and leather before I fancied a change and this is a very nice thing and certainly improved my seating position (I'm 6'1" and 90% legs). Probably could have got away with a 330mm but absolutely would have no chance in seeing the dials properly.
DEEP CORN by batousan, on Flickr
I also added a 90mm Tomei Duracon gear knob to replace the Razo metal one that was on there, its not quite a full jdm 12" canoe but its got a decent weight and a big improvement.

After this I got a little distracted with another certain small, light, orange car. A friend of mine in Canada was on the hunt for an S2 Exige with a massive mods list, we picked up this 300BHP thing, I looked after it before it was legal in Canada and he came over, we did a couple of track days last year, what a blast.
One at a wet Donnington and the other was a dry Cadwell. Both were awesome and both were terrifying. This is what happens when you've driven this car for less than 24 hours, its on worn Yoko AD048s and they have gone cold after the session gets red flagged... bleed on a tiny bit of power in 4th without un-winding all of the lock and I could have easily caused another red-flag haha.
Lotus S2 Exige at Donnington by batousan, on Flickr
Exige S2 Supercharged at Cadwell by batousan, on Flickr
This was basically the 3rd day of driving it and its not mine, and I hadn't seen a track for some 5+ years, as you can see I was a massive baby driving it but with a decent amount of seat time and some confidence this thing would be a monster round there. Excuses out of the way, heres a few laps of me bottling it, there were lots of sobering red flags that day.
This thing had loads of changes before getting shipped overseas this year, including straight cut gears, lsd, race suspension, baffled sump etc etc... Hanger111 were excellent to deal with, if you ever get into these I can highly recommend them. Very professional outfit.
So after that sat in my garage for part of the year and I kindly kept the oil moving around and making sure it still works (I mean its only right no?) it was back to reality, or rather back to something I can afford. Whilst the Roadster felt a little slow after that (the Subaru didn't so I didn't need to scratch the speed itch) it hadn't lost any of its charm.
Whilst I had the Lotus in the garage, the Roadster was with Dave at Deepcar Autobodies, which is just a 20-30 minunte drive from where I grew up. The tin worm had its way with the rear sills, even though one had previously been done so it was treated to new rear arches/sills and had the boot and wing re-painted, not a cheap endeavor but worth every penny for the workmanship. No matter where you are this place is worth a visit, Daves a sound bloke and the work is top notch. I will need the dented and every growing rust in front wings doing so that is still on the list for the future.
#BBS's need a refresh - As stated, typical nasty hallmarks of water between the lacquer and the diamond cut surface.
BBS 14x6JJ Lacquer Peel by batousan, on Flickr
I intended to pick up a spare set of BBS's anyway and when one came up powdercoated for good money I grabbed a set, I may refinish the originals as they were intented at some point but these will last much better I reckon. Had the spare set of OEM lotus wheels rubbered up to ship out with the car, they were just double the weight of the BBS at 10kg!
BBS 14x6JJ et45 Powder Coated by batousan, on Flickr
#Decent Alignment - Even though it was aligned, by means of a simple straightning out there were no major changes in Camber/Caster. It actually needs a proper alignment as it currently stands which I'm currently on the hunt for somewhere local who doesn't charge silly money and will happily move the numbers outside of a UK 1.6 mx5 spec.... this however will need doing sooner rather than later but more on that in a bit.
So the car had been sitting for something like 10 months (this year is probably to blame for that) so I had some issues with the aftermarket immobilser locking out the trickle charger so I had a go at ripping it out. It was not a cleanly fitted unit I must say, absolute state under there but I managed to get this absolute Spikey Canoe of thing out.
Aftermarket Immobilser Removal by batousan, on Flickr
It was all spliced into so many places as well as a very badly fitted not factory foglight switch which I had some fun and games with so I bodged that to get it through an MOT and eventually removed it and wired in a proper mazda switch. It all works but I have a few gremlins left over which I'm sure is a dodgy earth somewhere, the stereo and cig lighter don't work and sometimes the lights don't pop when you turn the lights on (the central switch works) so I'll have to revisit that. The nice suprise is despite being sat, there isn't an oil leak from the engine by the looks of things as the Millers Nanodrive 10W40 has all stayed in the engine, and clean too.
Oil after 3,000km and 10 months of storage by batousan, on Flickr
#Paint correction - So thought I'd have a crack at this myself. Pretty pleased with the results, its by no means perfect and theres nothing that can be done about the stone chips and dents in the wings/doors but these will be sorted all in good time.
NA6CE ロードスター S-Special Type I by batousan, on Flickr
Was so happy with the result I had a cheeky go at the wagon...
2004 スバル フォレスター SG9 STi バージョン by batousan, on Flickr
So really I've done what I wanted to do, it did take me a lot longer though as I've just enjoyed driving it. Apart from oil changes I've done new rear calipers, new disks and pads all round, a new clutch slave cylinder and a HEL braided clutch bypass line to clean that area up. Theres been a lot more spare time not travelling on the old train so over this year I've started doing a few more things here and there.
#Weather seal/rubber refresh - These are alllooking a bit tired now, I've put on door to window strips but man are these things pricey for rubber so I'll pick them up over time.
Also chucked on a set of Delrin door bushes, the garagestar ones were not available and the Kenauto ones are pretty steep so I picked up a set off ebay which are properly tight on one side, need to file them down a little.

Anyway, thats enough for now. I usually make a million spelling and grammer mistakes so if any of you enjoy finding those please have at it. Hopefully I will be little more active, if I start enjoying the car too much I'll probably forget I posted this and come back with the rest of the list done in 3 years time ...

#
Been in my brain for many years from watching repeats of Best Motoring and Initial D, I'm not looking to build a mega spec car just looking to flesh out the fun old car vibe. Of course I'm hoping to make a touch more power but snappy throttle, response and all the right honk noises is what I'm looking for. The supporting parts for the moment will be an ECU (preferably Link G4X), wideband, iat and associated wiring. Aim is to get things running smoothly with just the intake swap and on a standone ECU before adding anymore engine changes (ie. Cams). (Done 26/01/2023))

See below posts, these are now on the car and great. (Done 18/10/2020)

#
#
Get rid of any signs of rust. (Done 01/06/2021)
#
Prior to the lines and new fluid the brakes would get hot quick, will see if all this is needed but maybe just some better pads next time round starting with Roddisons pads working upto Carbotech if needed. (Roddisons pads done 13/06/2021)
#
#
- I'm not the only who drives this car so they need to slide for sure. (Done 07/06/2021)
#
Just to finish of the rear really, but only if they fit with the mud guards. I'd probably have to get the stupid fog light changed out and the hole in the bumper filled in though (why do importers do this?!) (Done 12/07/2021)
#
If I get the SPG's then its these and a roll bar, the ones in the Exige were the Schroth Profi II-FE ASM's and were great and very secure so would be happy with those too but I just prefer the look of the Takata's, besides Schroth was aquired by Takata and I'm pretty sure the Takata Race-4 ASM's are the same thing as the European ones are made to a different standard than the Japanese MPH341's so its a win win. (Drivers side done 01/08/2021)
#
Decided to go with a GC Fabrications GC3 Roll Bar. (Done 01/08/2021)

#
2nd hand Racing beat 4-1 (May revist the idea of maxim works/fujitsubo super-ex manifold but this will do for now). (Done 05/03/2022)
#
Beatrush, Carbing or Cusco probably, a cheapish easy cooling/bling mod. Not sure how much difference they make but some people suggest they are worthwhile. RHD had the Laile Beatrush Panel on offer so can tick this one off. (Done 29/03/2022)
#
Pretty sure this needs to come off, clean out the bell housing, check all the seals and put it back, probably have to put another clutch on maybe if I'm faffing in that area even though this one is pretty new...? After a steam clean I might have a weep from one of the seals, I've aquired parts to replace all these and will probably do this at the end of this season. Done 01/06/2024
#
#
