Hi, I have recently purchased a head that has been quite heavily skimmed, I am slowly gathering parts to swap the head onto my Mk1 1.6. I'd like to know what peoples experience with this is. Will the Mazda item be up to the task? or is it worth looking at something like a cometic head gasket?
I have done a bit of reading and it is suggested that the genuine head gasket is 0.040" thick and the cometic head comes in a variety of thicknesses. (What isn't clear is if these figures are when compressed or not).
At roughly 3 times the price of the genuine item I can't really see what the advantages are, but will it offer better longevity? The cometic head gasket is multi layer steel whereas the maruha website stated the mazda head gasket is made of asbestos.
Many thanks swordspork

My head is skimmed to the point that another skim will have the valves below the block face, lol.
OEM head gasket has been fine so far!

the B6t turbocharged engine in the Mazda323 used a conventional 'graphite' type hg, so should be good enugh ^^ plenty of fi 1.6 Mx5's live long with the standard / graphite type hg? if you need a hg with larger 'fire-rings' to suit a large overbore then go comtec etc. but if you dont....... amusingly, Mazda specc'd a steel / laminate hg for the 1.8 engine but this may have been down to cost? (possibly cheaper in bulk??) Rich.

I thought I'd uploaded a picture but I can't find it! The slightly dished cut-outs (IIRC?) round the valve seats are a whisker away from being totally gone now so another skim and I don't think the valves will seal! lol

Mine is back from the machine shop. That dented my wallet. It is now clean as a whistle. I'll take some pictures and put them on my thread.
