I'm in the middle of refreshing the boot on my mk1 (exciting times!) and having removed the battery, some fibre insulation material fell off of the quarter panel.

My question is twofold:
Can this insulation stuff be bought, and what is it called - I've not found the right combination of words yet?

What is it for? Is it just to try and stop dents in the quarter panel when fitting the battery or if its not tied down properly?

I thought it may have been there to stop the battery denting the panel if it got loose?

thought Mx5's left the factory with the Dent & it was a dealer option to have it removed

my '91 has evidence of glue & fluff but my '90 is clear in that area of rear wing...
