OMFG.
I have just been chasing an issue with the wiring for fucking hours, and I am using this post to vent.
Short history: Rebuilding car from bits after 3 years of sitting. So I have forgotten all sorts of shit.
Now, I am the first to admit I am no vehicle electrician. I am not interested in it, and I learn what I have to, to make things work. But this is ridiculous.
Engine was up and running, and idling nicely after starting it (using previous tune, which should be pretty close).
Started trying to get it ready to actually drive, so putting the coolant overflow tank in, tidying up things that were just lying around the engine bay.
One of those things was headlight motors - they are not working, so removed them, and the side light bulb holders as the bumper doesn't have the right holes for them yet.
GO to check everything is working, and it will turn over, but not fire up. it catches once or twice, but nothing else.
Then I realise that the fuel pump didn't prime, and the AFR gauge is not on.
'WTF?' I think to myself.
So, I thought maybe I had repeated my previous trick of not connecting the battery up properly. Checked that and realised that the bolt on the connector is stripped - that's why it came loose before. So replaced that and did it up properly.
Checked again, still no dice.
Got my wiring diagram out. Followed the power through the ignition switch, the right wires seemed to be getting power at the right time.
Moved on to the main relay. Checked the pins. Seeing power to the right pin with ign in 1st pos, then power to the other pin with ing in 2nd pos. All looks good.
That's odd. Maybe the main relay is buggered. Have a spare, tried that. Same.
Decided I would take one of them to pieces to make sure it wasn't fuckered. All looked ok. Plugged it in with the cover off (carefully) and it didn't connect. poked it with a screw driver to make the connection, and fuel pump fired.
Bench tested the relay. Working fine.
This is when i decided to check the ground to the main relay. It wasn't grounded properly.
WTF? I haven't bloody changed anything on the loom or ground connections.
I wracked my brains trying to work out if I have disconnected a ground somewhere.
Then i remembered the headlight motors. Plugged them back in and everything was working again.
So the right hand headlight motor is somehow giving me a ground connection when it is plugged in.
I think my car is possessed.
