Hi. New to forum and would appreciate any help. I need to replace the engine on my mk2 year 2000 'W' 1.8 nb. What are my options, Does it have to be the same engine or can I use any others? There seem to be more 1.6 engines available then the 1.8, could I fit one of these? What are the engine identification numbers I should be looking for?

You're after a BP4W 1.8 from an early NB so any with the old style numberplate.
1.6 is not a straight swap and neither is the vvt engine from facelift NBs but there's guide out there on the internet for doing them

Replacing a 22 year old engine with another 22 year old engine may not be the perfect solution to all your problems. If you can find a low mileage engine at a good price, that would be great. But the one you buy may be in as bad a condition or worse than the one you already have.
It may be worth considering a freshen up or a rebuild.
