Right... next stage of my rear end refurb is to dismantle the half shafts. I want to replace these rubber boots and then whilst it's all in bits.. dip these in my Bilt Hamber magic bath! Any tips on how to do this? Its all kind of solid!

I've never taken those apart. They should be like any other CV joint though.
To be honest though if the boots are in good condition then I wouldn't bother. You're making a lot of work for yourself for no reason.

I've never taken those apart. They should be like any other CV joint though. To be honest though if the boots are in good condition then I wouldn't bother. You're making a lot of work for yourself for no reason. They aren't split - just a bit old and dry looking. I'm working on the theory that this rear end strip down may as well leave no stone unturned - I don't want to be doing this again in a VERY long time! It just looks as though the only way to get those 2 sets of clips off the boots is to destroy them.

Generally when you remove a CV boot you replace it. I would honestly just clean up and paint the shaft then throw them back on. In 5 years of MX5 ownership I've never heard of one of these boots failing. They get such little flex, unlike on a FWD car, that I think they last until the rubber truly perishes. You could probably look into some kind of rubber treatment to restore their blackness and prolong their life though.

I've some Auto Glym rubber/vinyl cream. I'll give it a dab of that and see how it looks! Can of worms this job I tell you!

I replaced them with ones that stretch over the CV joint using a plastic cone.
