Thanks for the reply - i've only spliced in to the loom 4 times, twice at the diagnostics connector (well, i left the connectors ending in the diagnostics connector and just cut a couple of inches from the box and used a connector to connect to the new ECU for B+ And fuel pump) and twice at the old ECU connectors, so surely this would not cause the car to power without the key? My understanding of how that circuit works is poor, but I would have thought way before the ECU is involved there would be something in the circuit to say "is there a key?" and if there isn't, no power. So could it be the ignition switch itself? That doesn't explain the windscreen wipers powering everything though.

Sorry i've got that wrong - fuel pump and taco from diag box and ignition (white red) and rad fan from loom, where it connects to the old ecu.

Hi team, i'm a mahoosive numpty.
I managed to connect two connectors round the wrong way at the stalk switches!
It wasn't the ignition itself, but the wiper switch and whatever the other 6 pin connector is.
I feel suitably ashamed and am going to have some strong words with myself.
Thanks for your time!
Andrew

This does supply usefull info so heres some photo's if anyone searches in the future.... rear of stalks.... 4 plugs connect, one of the two 6pin plugs & sockets are only populated with 5 wires / terminals this shows the ignition-wiring plug in the stalks (top left) - has 6 wires in the plug... ignition plug on left (6 terminals) all 3 plugs are interchangable.... Rich.

to be fair, Mazda had the loom wrapped to keep these seperate, fiddlin & alarm / immobilisers can be responsible for this don't take too much notice of my loom as it's stripped & fiddles with compared to a standard car item... Rich.

Thanks guys - all very interesting! Whilst i'd like to cite poor design for my error, I think it was me who was deisgned poorly! Next question - the rocketeer kit uses a starter motor from a Jaguar S-Type which is hooked up to the big thick black wire (through an extension as the starter is now on the bottom of the engine/gearbox). I've got strong voltage (around 11v I think) at both terminals, however when I turn the key to start nothing happens. My car used to be an auto, so I know I have an inhibitor switch, but I thought i'd bypassed this by bridging the blue black/red black connectiosn at the clutch pedal. Any ideas?
