Well, it looks like it’s that time! Any recommendations as to who to use these days? Preferably North Yorkshire but I’d rather travel to the moon than have it butchered by a moron….again…. Or scrap it and start again…

Hello. Yes, advice I have.
Pull the engine out and do the job properly.
You don’t need an MX-5 specialist. You need a welder who is actually a proper qualified welder.
Regards. Rich.

Hi There.
I think it’s great that people do there own welding. A few of you here have gone out bought your welders and taught yourselves. Hats off to you. And even more respect for those of you that have shared the process along the way.
There is a saying in welding …. Thank Christ for grinders 😀 But as ones welding skills improve the grinder gets used less.
I’ve seen a few “Specialist” MX-5 garages work over the years. I was very unimpressed.
The dedicated amatures here do a good job because they are not into the profit side of life. Of course businesses are. Problem is, corners get cut and how many of them are qualified welders to begin with?
I keep saying it but it’s the bed-rock of all welding. PREPARATION is everything.
With the engine in place doing the chassis rails will always be a compromised job. And just putting metal over bad metal is not the way to do the job.
So …. If putting the job out for completion …. buyer beware.
Regards. Rich.

That’s why I asked for recommendations.
I had my sills done by a specialist, you can still see grinding marks behind the paint, there’s welding spatter or grinding sparks in the glass, and he broke off two captive nuts in my hardtop. The arches he said would never rust again started bubbling within 18 months of summers only use.
After a bit more googling, I think I’ll be paying CBS a visit next weekend.

The arches he said would never rust again started bubbling within 18 months of summers only use. Sadly, whenever you weld something on a car, you lose the protective zinc and paint coatings near the area. That will serve as the kernel for the next round of rust unless you replace it with something. You would be well served by a generous application of cavity wax near any area touched by a welder...preferably anually. As you've discovered the insides of the chassis get wet through condensation rather than spray. Something to keep in mind...

Just phoned CBS and he says he doesn't do them any more.
He did recommend mx5city, but I've read a few bad things with regards to their bodywork.
